Game concept

Follow the blue prints to carve the log into a fine furniture piece. Accuracy is of utmost importance!

Objective

Use a lathe to carve a log into a the design specified on the blueprint; the game ends when the sawdust bucket is full.

Gameplay

A random blueprint of a log profile will appear as well as a ‘real’ uncarved log which will rotate on a lathe. The player will place the various gouges on the lathe to carve out the log pattern. The gouges cannot overlap while being placed to carve, so the amount of gouges a player can use is only limited by the amount of space available. If more than two mistakes are made while carving a log, a booch results, and an new log and new blueprint will appear. Regardless of whether a player is doing well or poorly, the mere act of carving produces sawdust. Once the sawdust bucket is full, the game is over.

Scoring

A score of 0-3 will be given for each log completed. A score of three (3) will be given if a log is booched (has three mistakes). A score of two (2) will be given if there were two mistakes on the carving. A score of one (1) if there was one mistake, and a score of zero (0) if there were no mistakes. When the sawdust bucket is filled, the average will be calculated. An average score of two to three (2-3) will result in basic labor production. A score of one (1) is skilled labor, and an average score of zero (0) is expert labor. The average scores will be rounded to the nearest whole number. Artisanship^x bonuses will be awarded for every consecutive log with no mistakes (Similar to the crystal-clear^x in distilling or masterpiece^x in carpentry).

Variability

Basic Labor:

-Places a gouge in the incorrect place

-Does not get (m)any Artisanship carvings

-Does not consecutively get Artisanship carvings

-Makes lots of 'throw-away' pieces (pieces with three mistakes)

Skilled Labor:

-Does a good job of placing gouges, with few mistakes

-Gets some Arisanship carvings

-Makes few or no 'throw-away' pieces

-May even have a small Artisanship chain

Expert Labor:

-Excellent at gouge placement

-Does not have any 'throw-away' pieces

-Make large Artisanship chains

Other:Perhaps another layer of variability would be based on the difficulty of a blueprint. For example, novice players may have easier blueprints requiring that only 3 gouges be used to complete a log, and increase the difficulty (intricacy) of the blueprint designs as they increase in experience.

End criteria

The game ends when the sawdust bucket becomes full.

Difficulty scaling

Difficulty depends on the ability of the player. The better the player, the harder the game. This is because a better player will make no mistakes while carving the log ==> More intricate blueprint designs will appear. So you would really have to be good to do well.

Notes

The lathe/blueprint/gouge section is a completely original idea, and unlike many of the puzzles, this is not based on a grid.

Gouges- Gouges can be placed as seen on the picture (horizontal line on the gouge sits on the blue line of the lathe). They will then approach the wood in increments. Once the desiered shape has been made, the gouge will automatically reset into the tool box. Several gouges can be placed on the lathe at the same time, but they cannot overlap each other.

Also, in case it wasn't obvious, the lathe rotates the log rapidly, so that the resulting log is a three dimensional version of the blueprint (Think spindles, banisters, etc.)
