This event consists of eight mini-events run over the course of eight days.
The events are thematic, unique, and designed to challenge a variety of talents. They are divided into two groups of four. One group, in-game events, will challenge puzzling and logical ability. The other, played on the forum, will require artistic and creative merit. Participation in each event is completely optional. Those who enter at least four events, with at least one being in-game, and one being forum-based, will qualify for a grand prize!

Event Description
Pieces of Eight: An Event About Poe
America's master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, was a proponent of the inherent literary and artistic merit of short fiction and short poetry, as demonstrated by his vast and well-known body of work. In his spirit, we present Pieces of Eight: An Event About Poe. Match wits and puzzling skills with your fellow pirates as you follow the master's footsteps in not one large event, but eight different mini-events of skill and talent, all adapted with a piratey flair. Play your own game of Telltale Hearts. Drink from the Cask of Amontillado. Solve the Murders in the Rue Morgue. Create your own opuses drawn from the master's work, and produce homages to his creations of your choice. Will you come out on top? Or will you fall as did the House of Usher, to be known... nevermore?
Our eight events will challenge not only your puzzling talents, but your logical, creative, and artistic abilities, as well. The person who most demonstrates Poe's spirit in each event will receive a prize of 25,000 poe. But there is a grander prize at stake, too!
The eight events are divided into two groups of four. One group, in-game events, will challenge your puzzling and logical ability. The other, played on the forum, will require you to demonstrate your artistic and creative merit. Participation in each event is completely optional -- you may choose to play in as many or as few events as you wish.
Those who enter at least four events, with at least one being in-game, and one being forum-based, will qualify for the grand prize: a parrot familiar! You can consider it a raven if you wish. We do.

Grand-Prize Scoring
For each task completed, participants will be assigned a point value of 1-4 depending upon their performance. The winner of the task will receive 5 points. The best four scores of each participant, regardless of how many tasks are completed, will be totaled to determine the grand prize winner. In the event of ties (moderately likely), a tie-breaking contest will be arranged. Scores will be updated daily and made publicly viewable in the wiki.

Judging
Judging for the in-game events is simple as there are objective goals for each task (to be the first to complete a race, solve a riddle, or to win a tournament). Judging for the out-of-game tasks will be performed by myself and Rummykins. For two events, submissions will be e-mailed to him, stripped of identity, and then judged upon by me. For the other two, submissions will be e-mailed to me, stripped of identity, and then judged upon by him.

Workshop Coaching
This event is open to all oceans, but it favors Midnight players. I have arranged to have the drinking and hearts tournaments on free days, but the sloop race will be limited to subscribed players. Can I level the playing field more for those on other oceans? Judging for each mini-event (to determine the grand-prize winner) is not equivalent. In some events the majority of participants will receive a score of 1, while in others the majority will receive a 4. Is this a cause for concern? Are there any obvious targets for abuse by cheaters?
History
Previous Similar Events
Tell-tale hearts - I've seen proposals for hearts tournaments, but I'm not sure any of them have actually ever been completed. Here is one example. The twist of the tournament (the limerick "tale"), has never been done.
Design a pirate cast - Nothing exactly like this has been done before, but other semi-related events have taken place. The assembly of an entire cast is similar to the "design themes" presented on the Quid Pro Clothes website. Assembling pirate outfits into costumes (christmas costumes, couples costumes, superheros, etc) has also been done.
Sloop Relay Race - I can't find evidence of a straight relay race, where each leg is performed by a different individual. It seems likely that it has been done before, but so far I have only turned up these two relay races:
1. An event claiming to be a relay race, when it's really not
2. A relay, of sorts, where the first runner can help the second, and the first and second can help the third, etc.
Collage - I have found no evidence of a previous art event that involved making a collage.
Murder Mystery - A murder mystery has been done at least twice before by Dorel (links here and here), but both of these events seemed designed more along the lines of the popular "How To Host a Murder"-style roleplaying games. This particular event flows naturally from the source material, and will differ from the previous events in that it will focus more on riddling and problem solving ability than interactive roleplaying.
Writing Competition - There have been several events in which a poem or song is parodied. This particular event is most similar to round 7 of the Poetry Death Match, but I can find no evidence that something precisely like this has been done before.
Diorama - I have found no evidence of a previous art event that involved making a diorama.
Cask of Amontillado - This is a standard drinking tourney. It has been done many, many times. I added it because it's easy to work in to the theme, and more importantly, as the last event it's easy to score and determine the grand-prize winner (or finalists).
Duty Puzzle Deathmatch - I'm not sure if this has been done before. It has certainly been proposed before. The form for the deathmatch is modeled off of Amphitrite's sailing bake-off.
Qualifications
Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest, Secret Santa Gift Exchange, financial means to provide all prizes excepting the familiar. In the event that a familiar is not deemed appropriate for this contest, an additional and more substantial poe prize can be provided.
