- Things I've learned: Never put ugly/stupid things in your game. Everyone will want one. - Nemo
- I long ago learned my lesson about changing existing clothes. Adding to is fine, but making a tertiary color would involve programmers redoing the recoloring code. - Nemo

Nemo's Infinite Wisdom: The Director's Cut
- New clothing must be distinct from previous clothing including clothing belonging to the opposite sex.
No bare chests,no chest hair.- We have no architecture for separate accessories (jewelry, bandoliers, jugs, etc.) yet.
- The clothing must fit our theme (no religious costume, and we're still mostly in the western hemisphere in vaguely "pirate" times ~1600-1800. arabian, yes; japanese, not yet)
Diamondblade's Scroll of Technical and Practical Reasons for Clothing Idea Rejections
Technical
- Anything that involves higher boots, higher pants, or higher shirts can't be done. They are already as high as they will go- this means no knee-high boots. Note that it is possible for torso items and lower-half items to fall down over boots and/or pants. (I'm not sure if a torso item can cover boots, though) Examples of this would be both captain's jackets, swashbuckler's jackets, gowns, and I think also the flare pants.
- Anything that would not fall into the existing categories of hat, shirt, pants, and boots can't be done.
- Anything that requires anti-aliasing between choosable colours won't work. This is why true tartan kilts seem to be an impossibility.
- Anything that requires new poses to be added. Too much work.
- Things that are simply too big (ie. wide) to allow room for other pirates. Pirates have to be able to fit in all the spaces they currently can while wearing your suggested clothing.
Practical
- Items similar to existing items "but for the same gender" are a no-no. They have to be different from ALL existing items- this also includes some female items that don't fit the theme, while male versions would. eg. Male flare pants, conquistadora armour, female swashbuckler's jacket, etc...
- Items that just aren't different enough, despite being pretty distinct. Just wear the item that's so similar, and then pretend you're wearing what you actually wanted ;) There's too many to name. A good example of what DOESN'T fit here would be the difference between the swashbuckler's jacket and the captains jacket. It had a sash, there's no inner colour, and it's much thinner, so it got added.
- Probably likewise for items that are "like an existing item, but with two colours/one colour." Why not just ask for the existing item to be changed?
- Items that don't fit the theme. This includes: Robes, asian pirates, (yes, they existed, no, they're not part of the theme) and colour combinations that are OBVIOUSLY too modern. (think green and blue striped shirts. What sort of pirate wore green and blue stripes?)
