You, the judges...

So, uh, we got a few (hundred) more entries than I'd expected, and this leaves us in a tricky situation. Here's how we're going to get through it:

You have permission to skip entries. If you look at the finished product, and it just looks like yuck, it probably wouldn't score all that well anyway, so assign it a score of X (indicating that you skipped it) and move on. Scores will not be released to entrants, so don't be scared to do this.

Set high standards. With 246 entries, it's very important that we distinguish between the entries at the top of the spectrum; it doesn't matter if 20 entries tie for last place, but if 20 tie for first, we've got a huge problem. I would suggest that you give an average entry 30% instead of the 50% you might normally give it; 50% means pretty good, 80% means exceptional, and 100% means it emerged from the loins of a virgin. Set your own standards, but remember that higher standards will make life easier for everyone (you, the entrants, and me) down the line, simply because there are so many high-quality entries in this event.

Final scores will be determined by averaging, not by addition. As such, if you think you know someone a bit too well to objectively judge their entry, skip it. (Remember, mark an X for a skip, not a zero.)

I'd like to get this (judging) wrapped up within 2-3 weeks, but take your time. I'd suggest just setting aside a few hours and plowing down the list all at once.

Judging itself

When you're ready to go judging, decide on your rubric (you might want to skim the entries thread to get a general feel for quality before setting your rubric), then dive in.

As a reminder, here is the scoring breakdown:

Up to 15 points for creative materials
- Evidence of art supplies should tank the entry in this category.
- Use your own definition of "art supplies"; if you'd like some input, though, when I'm determining what I consider to be art supplies, I ask myself if the object in question has any purpose other than being used to make things look pretty. If I can't think of any other purposes, I count it as an art supply.
Up to 10 points for realism
- Does it look like what it's supposed to look like? (We're aiming for "it looks like a YPP familiar" rather than "it looks like an actual, real-life octopus-monkey-parrot" here.)
Up to 15 points for artistic merit
- Is the design original and unique? Is there obviously a lot of thought behind this entry, or was it just thrown together?
Up to 10 points for tilt
- Did you LIKE this entry?

That means there's a grand total of up to 50 points per judge per entry.

Please format your scores as thus:

Entry # ~ [Materials, Realism, Artistic Merit, Tilt] [Total]
Any comments you might have

For example:

Entry 44 ~ [6, 7, 2, 4] [19]
Something just seems to be missing here... it definitely looks like a ferret,
but it's not the most original, or successful, design.

I've got a template all geared up and ready to use at http://www.cecinestpasunwebsite.net/assessment.txt Just save it to your computer (Open it in your web browser, then go to File and Save As) and edit away.

When you're ready to send in your scores, just attach them in a .txt file and send to thatponytailguy@gmail.com. Please include the acronym BYOF at the beginning of your subject so gmail sorts it properly. :)

How do you determine entry numbers? Here's the list. (Read the notes BELOW the list before you get into it, though!)

A few quick notes on the list:

Some entrants have put more than one entry in a single post. In this case, look at the link name: if it says Weirdbeard's Parrot, scroll down a bit and you'll probably find Weirdbeard's Parrot, even if the top of the post was Weirdbeard's Monkey.
It might help you in this process to set your forum account to view only 5 posts at once (My profile > My information > Posts per page), as then you won't have to wait so long for the pictures in other posts to load.
If, after the page loads, you're staring at an entry other than the one you're supposed to be looking at, click in your address bar and press enter to (hopefully!) reassert the anchor.
