Table Explanation

Table Formatting

As you can see, this is a one-row table with four cells. I put spaces between the cell declarations here for clarity, though I wouldn't on a real page. I know you've done some experimentation with tables, so I won't bore you with the wikicode. The border, cellspacing, cellpadding, and width are all straight-up HTML. They're really useful, so if you're not familiar with them, here's a crash course:

• border on a table, the border attribute sets the width of the borders around the table as well as between the cells. I didn't want an external border, and I knew I'd want different border colors for each cell, so I shut them off
• cellpadding sets the whitespace between the border of a cell and the contents of the cell
• cellspacing sets the whitespace between the border of a cell and the border of the next cell over
• width is pretty self-explanatory. I set it to make sure the table used the whole page, because I thought it'd look better that way.

If you see padding and margin settings inside an elements style="", those do pretty much the same as the cellpadding and cellspacing, respectively.

Row Formatting

The first time I fired up a preview, everything was centered vertically in the cells. That's very pleasing with text, so I put in the style="vertical-align:top;" on the row to make sure that every cell in that row would have its text aligned at the top.

Cell Formatting

So, since the table is only taking care of spacing, we need the cells to take care of color, borders, etc. I used CSS exclusively for this, rather than mixing it with plain HTML—I thought this was cleaner. So, a quick trip to YPPedia:Color and style reveals header and background colors and templates. Here's the contents of Viridian's background style:

In mediawiki, the table syntax is unintuitive. If you have only one | on a line, it knows that you only have text. If you have two || in a line, it takes the code between them and makes it HTML parameters, and everything after the second one is included as text. If you look closely above, you'll see that I put the cell formatting on one line and the content on the next line. It's just cleaner when you type it this way. Also, I wanted the columns to be even, horizontally, so I made sure to tell the browser that each one is 25% of the table wide (use : instead of = in CSS, and finish each term with a semicolon (;)). So, we have our style, and we know where to put HTML commands for a table cell, so the last thing to do is format it up

Most tables will have the ocean name in its own header cell, like on the fruit pages (e.g. Bananas). Antix had mentioned not knowing a lot of mediawiki code, though, so I wanted to keep it as easy as possible for him to edit. Leaving the ocean names as section headers meant that the edit links were still there, so he could maintain his own blockade list.

Crew / flag categories

Ahoy! It's rarely necessary to add a category tag for flags and crews (unlike for pirates). The infoboxes add the right categories automatically. The only time we add them manually is for category sorting for names that start with "A", "The", and similar situations. Thanks for the hard work adding new pages, though. I was just thinking... wouldn't it be quite cool for events like this to have their own page, with the winning entries/ runners up included? Forgive me if this has already been discussed, or is already implemented! Figured it never hurts to ask. Contests like this are generally archived in the Art: namespace [1]. To create an article in that namespace, just preceed the name you'd like to use with Art:. Also, it's best to avoid using exclamation points and question marks in article titles as it can mess up how many browsers see the article.

Darkviper Page Updates and Changes

I was unaware of the edit tag, as I started editing about 30mins before you started, so our updates clashed... Thank you for the tidying up, but you have changed some aspects which other people have on their pages?

Thanks adding my Crew info for all the oceans, as I wasn't able to check them, because I am in work, and Y!PP gets stopped by the firewall >:S

I have searched the wiki and I cant find any conventions to say that I cant you the outline box around the Pirate infobox? if there is a page, I would like to read it please. :)
and if there are other pages like that that owuld be of help I would be very grateful.

the reason for the multiple ssaves is that this syste, has an unreliable internet browser, which randomly crashes. Salmon has also edited the page after you did, to correct a mistake that was made by yourself during your update. this was the change of 'THE smugglers guild' As that is the name of the crew. The crew page is currently being created by Salmon.

Help! lol

Hi hi! I was wondering if you knew why the "enamel-based" colour table has a whole lot of extra boxes underneath it on the Furniture palette page... It worked in the preview, and then went weird :S. The cloth one worked, and they are the same! Please help silly Adrielle, lol. I was also wondering whether I should just put that table once - under a heading like 'cloth or enamel based' rather than having it twice, lol. Adrielle =) 09:40, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
