Talk:Current events

From YPPedia

Maybe this should go on our Current events page, or even the YPPedia:Community Portal. If you check out Wikipedia:Current events, you'll see a bit of what I'm after. I'm more inclined for the Community Portal to be wiki current events, and Current events be current game events, sort-of like the in-game news page. – Yaten talk 11:01, 11 August 2005 (PDT)

That would be... logical :P I'll move it over when I have time if no one has yet! Thanks everyone for all the help who's been fixing all my mistakes ;) --Artemis 12:20, 11 August 2005 (PDT)

And here it is! --Guppymomma 12:26, 11 August 2005 (PDT)

Strange coding

Hm. I removed the Vignette event and the page appears to have booched? Featherfin 18:26, 5 November 2005 (PST)

There's a bug on web3 which causes HTML comments to booch up. --Thunderbird 18:38, 5 November 2005 (PST)
Known issue involving comments. I've fixed the page. --Barrister 18:38, 5 November 2005 (PST)

Blockades

This actually seems like a good spot to put info about blockades that are happening on whatever weekend. More easily editable than an individual post on the forum. Yay or nay? --Guppymomma 12:26, 13 August 2005 (PDT)

Great idea. Let's come up with a semi-standard format for it. This weekend's blockades are already in progress, so we've got some time to think about it. I have some ideas.... --Barrister 12:45, 13 August 2005 (PDT)
How about similar to the brief blockade history only with jobbing contacts? This would be split into separate ocean sections.

Sun August 14

  • Starthour Blah Island (sinking/nonsinking)
Flagname (pay info)
Jobbing Contacts: Blah
Flagname2 (pay info)
Jobbing Contacts: Blah

And so on. --Guppymomma 21:39, 13 August 2005 (PDT)

Wiki Server Time

There seems to be a discrepancy between {{CURRENTTIME}} (00:13), which is UTC, and {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDATE}} (March 29), which has to be PDT (at the time this talk message was posted). I looked around at Help:Variable, and I'm not sure if there's a way to trick the server into writing {{CURRENTTIME}} as PDT, but it would sure be helpful if there was. – Yaten talk 23:40, 13 August 2005 (PDT)

In fact, how often do those variables update? I've just noticed my user page, this page, and the article page are all behind by quite a bit. – Yaten talk 23:44, 13 August 2005 (PDT)
Maybe it's a cache thing? I'll try peeking around later. --Guppymomma 09:12, 14 August 2005 (PDT)
Someone mentions something similarish on the talk page for Wikipedia:Help:Variable --Guppymomma 10:06, 14 August 2005 (PDT)
Okay, I'm pretty sure this is something you'd have to request Calrissian put in specifically as the Recent changes page does it using internal code variabley stuff. MediaWiki:Rclistfrom --Guppymomma 10:10, 14 August 2005 (PDT)

__NOEDITSECTION__?

With so many sections, this page is becoming a mess of [edit] buttons. Take them out? – Yaten talk 14:43, 19 August 2005 (PDT)

Agree--Fiddler 14:44, 19 August 2005 (PDT)
I agree for the individual events, but it's handy to be able to click edit on Cobalt -> Events. --Guppymomma 14:47, 19 August 2005 (PDT)

Needs a more user friendly design

It's not just the many edit buttons, the whole page is a little unwieldy and overwhelming. We need to thinktank some ideas for improving it to a more user friendly thingee. --Guppymomma 00:45, 20 August 2005 (PDT)

Okay, I'm completely convinced that blockades need to be in Current blockades instead of here due to the confusing mess. I will make a delusional fish unilateral move to move it there and add Current blockades to the navigation bar. If you disagree you can uhm, pour salt into my tank. --Guppymomma 12:56, 20 August 2005 (PDT)

I've been trying to think of a better design myself. I'm not sure that it pays to separate each to a separate page, first step I think a pretty colored block per ocean would be a good starting place, the events aren't even all that long so we could probably just do four quadrants, one for each ocean. --Artemis 16:45, 29 August 2005 (PDT)

So long as you keep it easy to edit - the Wikipedia is becoming steadily more difficult to edit because of the special markup lanquage - the very antithesis of what a Wiki is supposed to be. Jdl1963 16:53, 29 August 2005 (PDT)

It looks quite a bit better now, hopefully and should still be easy to edit --Artemis 09:26, 30 August 2005 (PDT)

Very nice. Is it posible to tie these colors in with the header colors used by the infoboxes on the rest of the site?--Fiddler 16:04, 30 August 2005 (PDT)
Yes. Done. --Guppymomma 16:26, 30 August 2005 (PDT)

Could event deadlines be put on the main page (Current_events)? - Polny

It's been discussed a bit. Check out User:Yaten/sandbox for one possible design. – Yaten talk 15:00, 15 October 2005 (PDT)

Alerts

I've created at {{Alert-Parrot}} (Usage) and {{Alert-Octopus}} (Usage) graphic to serve as visual draws to those events. As soon as I can see the monkeygrid again, I'll add one for the monkeys.--Fiddler 16:04, 30 August 2005 (PDT)

And now I've gone and created {{Alert-Monkey}} (Usage), {{Alert-Ship}} (Usage), and {{Alert-Portrait}} (Usage), for the events page. I think they're all pretty self explanatory.--Fiddler 06:21, 31 August 2005 (PDT)

Shouldn't there be a Trinket Alert image as well? I believe that they're rare enough to have their own alert image.--Zyborg22 06:54, 8 November 2005 (PST)
Aren't the OMs still putting these up in random, unannounced tourneys, though? --AtteSmythe 10:07, 8 November 2005 (PST)
I've never seen a pre-announced Trinket tournament. I have, however, seen the OMs advertise them for forum events, such as the Pumpkin Carving contest and Apollo's avatar contest.--Gloraelin 19:28, November 8, 2005 (PST)

I've made Alerts for Serpent, Ippolito, Ghostling and Dragon: {{Alert-Serpent}} (Usage),{{Alert-Ippolito}} (Usage),{{Alert-Ghostling}} (Usage),{{Alert-Dragon}} (Usage) Just fighting with that frame. --Aeternis 02:23, 21 January 2013 (PST)

Familiar box

There's a (to me) inexplicable space between the octopus line and the parrot line. I looked all over, but I can't figure out why. If anyone cares to take a stab at it, I'm more interested in knowing what the problem is, at this point, than actually getting rid of the space. --AtteSmythe

Forgot to mention that it's there in both IE and FireWhatever
It's something weird with the css for the site I think. For tables it happens if the text directly follows the | instead of being on the line after it. --Guppymomma 10:33, 20 September 2005 (PDT)

Awards Key box

For some reason, I'm able to see the monkey award icon, but neither the octo or the parrot show up at all. --Eurydice 16:34, 21 October 2005 (PDT)

See the notice at the top of every page. It's ye olde image bug that's still around here (not all of the servers in the cluster have every image). --Thunderbird 16:39, 21 October 2005 (PDT)
With the image, bug, though, I at least see a broken link to the image. This has nada. That's why I commented at all. --Eurydice 20:39, 21 October 2005 (PDT)
It depends. If the image is just put in without alt text or a frame & caption, then you see absolutely nothing. The weird image links are only there if there's the text stuff in the image tag options. --Guppymomma 21:01, 21 October 2005 (PDT)
o. Carry on, then!  :D --Eurydice 07:31, 22 October 2005 (PDT)

Cobalt?

Maybe I'm just blind, but is Cobalt missing from the list or what? --VPeric

Nevermind, I really am blind. However, I don't think Cobalt should be the first ocean on the listing. Maybe put it there after Midnight, but before Viridian?
Whoops, looks like the formatting was booched. I think I've fixed it. – Yaten talk 06:48, 6 November 2005 (PST)

Formatting problem -- help

Ack! My edit to include the musical parrody has ruined the page. Someone, please fix this for me (I thought I knew what I was doing with the wiki)

Say hi to my good friend the reverterator. The comment thing is a known issue. --Thunderbird 20:33, 8 November 2005 (PST)

Fixing cobolt and midnight?

I removed an event that was only for december and it kind of connected the two things :\ very sorry for that i didnt mean for that to happen --32083 11:47, 1 January 2006 (PST)

Fixed. Don't worry about it. --Piplicus 11:52, 1 January 2006 (PST)

Sorry

Yeesh, sorry guys. Thanks for catching my mistakes. --Zava 08:23, 10 January 2006 (PST)

Exception?

I'm organizing an event with a grand prize of five sloops. While this is not a > brig unto itself, would the number push it over and make the deed logo appropiate? --Teeg 16:10, 17 January 2006 (PST)

  • Support - prize pool of at least equal value. --AtteSmythe 20:19, 17 January 2006 (PST)
  • Support - Sounds fine to me.--Fiddler 20:21, 17 January 2006 (PST)

New icon needed

We need an icon that indicates that a familiar will be awarded, but that the type has not yet been announced. --Barrister 15:40, 9 February 2006 (PST)

Perhaps a pirate's shoulder with a question mark where the familiar should be? (Then you could also use it for the "Familiar of your choice" and "Red monkey, blue octopus, or polka-dotted parrot" prizes.) --Teeg 21:21, 9 February 2006 (PST)
Too tiny to be able to discern a shoulder & this method matches better with the others, but I also gave the suggestion of a question mark to make it more clearly "choice." Fiddler's just a tad busy and will get to it soon, unless someone else wants to snag it and add a question mark - it IS a wiki :) --Guppymomma 07:35, 10 February 2006 (PST)
Hesitant to upload and overwrite, but how's this: http://www.digitalarcadia.net/Alert-Blank.png Didnt take long, if that's not what you meant/wanted, no big deal. :) --Zava 11:19, 10 February 2006 (PST)
Looks lovely, go for the upload :) Thanks! --Guppymomma 12:30, 10 February 2006 (PST)

New Category?

I'm trying to figure out where to put my Four Ocean Crypto-Hunt event. It starts on Midnight but eventually goes to Cobalt, Viridian, and Sage and it's open to subscription and doubloon players. Should I create a new category or should I put it in each ocean section? -- Bootlicker 22:47, 22 February 2006 (PST)

In the history, there's a now-unused "all oceans" section. You can use its code and the current examples to make a new section. --AtteSmythe 23:32, 22 February 2006 (PST)
The revision you're referring to uses very different code from the current revision. Are you sure I should copy the old code into the current page? Ok, not very different, but it doesn't use templates like the current revision does. I'll make the change and let someone else fix it up if necessary. --Bootlicker 00:11, 23 February 2006 (PST)
It's not so different - the content is merely in a template, rather than all at this page. I set up the all oceans section for you. Edit it as any other: use the edit link next to the "All Oceans" header in the grey box. --AtteSmythe 00:17, 23 February 2006 (PST)

Golden tickets

I hope you don't mind that I'm adding a golden ticket template to the current events. A few people have been asking for current events to be updated, so I'll add mine in. --Pip(t|c|p) 09:28, 5 June 2006 (PDT)

No problem. It makes a lot of sense. --Barrister 12:50, 5 June 2006 (PDT)

"Planning Event(s)"

As far as the History would have me believe, this section hasn't been used since... ever. Can we nuke it? --Ponytailguy 19:45, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

I think E2 was used there...but that's about it. --Thunderbird 19:48, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
Kill it. --Guppymomma 20:12, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

What to list?

Do we list monthly official events i.e. bake-offs and familiar auctions? What about the OCL? How long do we keep running events on the board? Do we wait for the event to completely end, or just keep it there as long as it is still possible to join? Gail 06:07, 26 July 2006 (PDT)

It doesn't seem like there are any particularly specific rules for this page (aside from that events have to meet the event qualifications to be posted, I believe). I think it would be reasonable to include the OCL; I'm not sure about well-known "recurring" events, though. It seems to generally be up to the event organizer as to how long the notice should stay up for; this board isn't so full that there's any shortage of "real estate." --Emufarmers 21:20, 26 July 2006 (PDT)

Cleaning up

I'm gonna try and clean this up. I'm wondering if I can remove the "Puzzle Pirates Face-Off" event which is, theoretically, running, but nobody's replied to the forum topic since April, and the forum created for the purpose of the event appears to have been deleted; presumably it just never came to be. Can I clip it? --Ponytailguy 09:28, 31 August 2006 (PDT)

Silence as consent? --Ponytailguy 18:55, 1 September 2006 (PDT)

Event information/prizes

Alert-Ship.png

indicates a ship brig sized or larger is being awarded.

The icon and description corresponding to a ship prize being awarded does not correctly match up to the actual usage of the icons. For example, under the Sage section, a renamed sloop is filed under the category of having a larger ship being awarded for the Sage PvP Challenge.

Not a big issue, but one that could be changed to avoid confusion. Could either change the description to any ship being given out, any ship of a smaller class with renames or a larger ship, or just larger ships.HolyApoc 16:52, 21 February 2007 (PST)

Protection

Some parts of the page are protected to edit and some parts aren't. I'd be fine with either, but not with a mix. On the other hand I wonder if this page still makes sense as the events on the front page are linked to the Official:Events now. Perhaps we should just link the current events there too? --Aeternis 02:41, 21 January 2013 (PST)

I've unprotected 'Current Cerulean Events', I believe that was the only one protected. I'll leave the rest up to you guys to decide upon. --Clotho 21:16, 22 January 2013 (PST)

Updates

Looks like this page is no longer updated regularly. Is there someone willing to take the task or should we simply use the Official:Events instead? (And edit this page accordingly) --Clotho 15:56, 20 February 2013 (PST)

No takers for the task. Edited to use Official:Events to feed this page, at least is up to date! If someone wants to retake this task in the future, please let me know so I don't meddle with it anymore. --Clotho 13:11, 13 September 2013 (PDT)

Unofficial Events section

I notice this is included twice, once via Official:Events and once directly. --Thunderbird 00:28, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
