Ship spawn refers to the brigand/barbarian ships that will try to engage you. The might ring color you can spawn up to is indicated by route color but also depends on how many of the previous battles you have won, and the crewing levels of your ship. Usually you get bigger ships attacking you if your crew is near or at maximum. On a sloop you will start getting cutters, dhows, baglahs, longships and War Brigs if you have 7 yellow named pirates on board, the spawns also seem to depend on the route color. War Brigs will spawn between War Brig and Grand Frig. War Frig will spawn between War Frig and Grand Frig.
