Pythagoras (c.582 - c.507)
Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher, is the founder of a school with two significant teachings: The transmigration of souls and that numbers constitute the true nature of reality. His followers came to regard him as a demigod and attributed all their works to his name, so it is impossible to determine what contributions are specifically his.
As mystics, they followed strict codes to enable their souls to reach higher ranks in subsequent lives, which led them to enlightened ideas, for the time, regarding the equality of the sexes, humane treatment of slaves, and respectful treatment of animals.
In respects to their theory of numbers, they believed that all things, from music, to objects, even to ethical concepts such as Justice, could be expressed as numerical values. The Pythagoreans were influential mathematicians, and that a theory still holds their name bespeaks how influential they were in early Euclidian geometry.
The Pythagorean Theorem:
For a right triangle with legs a and b and with hypotenuse c:
a2 + b2 = c2
