On the Rocks was named by Nowie and created by Shodan on August 19, 2005. On the Rocks first hit Imperial on December 21, 2005. Shodan had been working to push the rating up to Imperial for a month, and viewed it as an early Christmas present. Upon his retirement on April 16th, 2006, Shodan left the crew in the care of Jaenelle, Tripleswitch, and Zava as an Oligarchy. Roughly two months later, Zava was promoted to Captain of the crew. At that point, the group of crewmates known previously on the crew forums as OTR's Core were promoted to Senior Officers.
As of April 25 2006, On the Rocks members owned six of the nineteen familiars on Sage. (Roughly one third - Hypnotoad owns one, Kerix owns two, Silverdawg owns two, and Zava owns one.) By the end of 2006, the crew's familiar count was up to 17.
On the Rocks became the founding crew of the Armed Cocktail Party on May 20th of 2006. Later, On the Rocks decided to join Passive Aggression.

Recruitment Policy
OTR has a distinguished history as one of the strongest and oldest crews on Sage. We did not achieve this through simple luck; OTR is comprised of some of the finest pirates upon the seas. To that end, we're a bit particular about those people who we welcome into our ranks. If you are:
- Completely new to Puzzle Pirates;
- Not joining with your main pirate (e.g., you're playing your alt);
- Looking for an immediate position as a high-ranking officer;
- Unable to grasp the difference between numbers and letters;
- Unable to communicate in a coherent manner,
then OTR is not the crew for you.
What we expect from potential recruits:
OTR is a mature, literate crew; we expect anyone interested in joining our ranks is of a like mind. We can be a bit on the rowdy side on occasion, but we all have equal respect for our peers.
Pirates interested in joining OTR should be an accomplished duty puzzler. A strong interest in parlor games is welcome, too! Unlike other crews, we do not have minimum requirements for joining. Instead, we will take into consideration all of your abilities, your attitude towards the game, and your enthusiasm for our crew. You should have an active interest in the Sage Ocean, and be keen on stirring up mayhem through pvp, wars, and the occasional blockade. We also welcome pirates who home on other oceans; if you're looking for a great place to park your pirate as you await the next tournament, bake-off, or assorted challenge, OTR is the place for you! We view the ocean as one big party. And we're that group of folks that goes around inviting ourselves in.
What potential recruits can expect from OTR:
OTR is a high-talent, entertaining crew. Long considered the elite group of pirates on Sage, any member of OTR becomes highly regarded within the game. OTR crewmates enjoy the occasional high-end brig pillages and frequent sloop pvp battles, as well as involvement in many of Sage's blockades. While we do not offer training, existing OTR officers are more than willing to give advice and tips on puzzling, gaming and Puzzle Pirates in general. New members into OTR will be welcomed into our flag, Passive Aggression, wherein they will be able to take advantage of the full resources of many more experienced pirates, flag pillages, and of course, flag warfare.
Recruitment Process:
Upon speaking with a Senior Officer of OTR, and expressing your interest, you may be offered a position either jobbing in a current pillage, or as a cabin person within our crew. This officer will be then known as your sponsor into the crew.
New recruits will be given a trial period in On the Rocks of a week to ten days as a cabin person. This way, you can see what we're all about, and we can get to know you better, guilt free. If you aren't available online, or log in only infrequently within that timeframe, your trial may be extended for another week.
After such time has elapsed, your sponsor will then place your full membership up for vote by the fleet officers. After some discussion, if necessary, you will then be given the full rank of Pirate or Officer within On the Rocks.
Advancement Opportunities:
New recruits into OTR, after their trial period, will be promoted to either Pirate or Officer within the crew. To be recruited in as an Officer rank, you either need to have held that rank (or higher) in a previous crew, or have displayed an outstanding command of all aspects of piracy within your trial period.
Officers are promoted up to Fleet Officer status after having spent time as an Officer, or when they have demonstrated their level of dedication and trust.
Senior Officers are the crew leaders, serving as our Captaincy. At this time, we are not promoting into that rank.
