History

Granuaile is a nickname of Grace O'Malley (known in Gaelic as Gráinne Ní Mháille) who lived in the second half of the sixteenth century. She was a famous Irish pirate; ships owned by O'Malley would stop and board traders off the coast of Galway, Ireland, and demand money or a portion of the cargo in exchange for safe passage to shore. Resistance was met with violence. In later life, O'Malley became an instigator of rebel activity against England.
