User talk:Sagacious/Blockade History Rework

From YPPedia

Some thoughts...

  • I definitely prefer the second version in April to the first. On a day with 4 blockades, those horizontal bars are going to be essential for readability.
  • The phrase "No defender" just won't work. For example, take a look at Byrne I. A non-contender won a round, and that needs to be reflected.
  • The text should, I think, be top-aligned.

I might have more comments later. --Barrister 14:11, 11 June 2006 (PDT)

I've aligned it all to the top. If you look at the date column on May - does that look ok, or should I force the table to have vertical bars each time? I think that not having bars in that column each row helps to group blockades that took place on the same day. Edit: I've changed it so the cells are filled. Does that look better? --Sagacious (talk) 18:30, 11 June 2006 (PDT)
I think you can remove the bullet point before each blockade name (i.e., Guava I). Also, is there a way to remove the vertical bars from the table? --Barrister 18:54, 11 June 2006 (PDT)
I can't find a wiki code variable to use to remove all the vert bars - but I can colspan over blank sections to remove pesky bars. Removing all the vert bars with colspan would mean the contents of the table probably won't line up with the top lables, or look right against the other contents. I found a way around the date column bar merging... --Sagacious (talk) 19:20, 11 June 2006 (PDT)

It's pretty close to what I envisioned. I'm not sure what I think of the May 1st notes being all the way on the right. That needs some more thought. Overall, good work. --Barrister 19:47, 11 June 2006 (PDT)

How about a complete colspan for special 'day notes'. It looks rather cool - May 1st has been tweaked for your table viewing pleasure. If that revision gets the official rubberstamp of apporoval - I just need to know...Big Date headers or slightly smaller ones? (the ones I used for the mock headers are small). --Sagacious (talk) 00:37, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Overall, I like it. It's not quite as "clean" as I'd hoped, but it's definitely the right structure. Let's wait for some feedback from others. --Barrister 00:54, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Does it look any neater with thinner bars? --Sagacious (talk) 01:09, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Yes, it does. FYI, heading to bed very soon, so that's it for tonight's comments. --Barrister 01:14, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

Rixation's Suggestions

Would look like this:

Hmm would mean adding extra code to each line (something I was trying to dodge...) but I suppose I could give it a shot. The underlining is very minor - suppose that could be left out. --Sagacious (talk) 11:15, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

Well, per-line code isn't too bad if we create a template for the style= portion of the line. colspan would obviously have to remain separate. It also changes the spans to divs and removes the per-row valign:top. Also note that for lines like May 5, the right-hand bullets are now v-centered. ::shrug:: --AtteSmythe 11:21, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
>.< Stop showing off :P Yes templates for style...good idea...will tinker...--Sagacious (talk) 11:39, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Excellent job, Atte. Exactly what I was thinking, just didn't have the coding prowess to do it.  ;) --Rixation(t/c) 11:51, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Can you tell difference now there is a sleek-ish template running on Guava_1? --Sagacious (talk) 13:07, 12 June 2006 (PDT)
Just seeing if the template idea has any support/opposition - and whether there is anything else that could improve this. If not, shall I go rework the history pages? --Sagacious (talk) 13:38, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
I think it's much better than what we currently have. --AtteSmythe 13:54, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
Looks nifty to me, but I'd rather have valign top for the sake of knowing that the name/number of the blockade will be right there at the top. --Guppymomma 16:01, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
Hmm I'm good either way. Both ways look fine - and thanks to templates it's simple not possible to make the change because it messes around with the 'next col' things. I hope you don't mind the three 'Block' templates. Part of my work on this is to make it look good with 'budget' code. --Sagacious (talk) 16:04, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
You can't just valign top the entire row/pile of stuff? These comments are basically from a web designer's usability sort of standpoint because the height of the rows is going to vary and the tables will be fairly large in some cases. --Guppymomma 16:16, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
For some reason, it insists on sitting in the middle-left. Trying to find some nice code that might fix it... --Sagacious (talk) 16:19, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
I can try taking a look later tonight when I have a moment, but being a highly self-taught person myself, I wouldn't want to infringe upon your exploration learning experience unless you wanted me to. --Guppymomma 16:22, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
A minor table code oversight means it wasn't working. Fixed :-) I'm going to spend some time doing the entire midnight history on the Rework page...--Sagacious (talk) 16:25, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

April 2004

You still need to fix April's defenders. --Barrister 03:39, 14 June 2006 (PDT)

Fixed, forgot about that. --Sagacious (talk) 03:45, 14 June 2006 (PDT)
Well page lengths do vary quite a bit - Old Version vs. New Version. The code length behind them is only more on the new version because of the use of new lines to make the code more readable. I'll work on some more conversion later. --Sagacious (talk) 03:59, 14 June 2006 (PDT)

A few more thoughts

A couple more things. 1) When you finish creating this page, please let me know. I'd like the opportunity to proofread the page before you replace the old version. 2) I was thinking that perhaps we could color-code sinking blockades vs. non-sinking blockades. Maybe a pink background for sinking and a light blue background for non-sinking. --Barrister 14:39, 15 June 2006 (PDT)

Are you thinking the whole row coloured? I could probably make that happen. --Sagacious (talk) 14:43, 15 June 2006 (PDT)
After some on-off playing, I can't seem to make a reasonable code instert to make the row colour change happen. I can make everything but the date columns coloured, but that would mean an extra line of code insterted. It could also make the conversion of current code to the new table format more time consuming. I'm open to any suggestions for an easy way round this. --Sagacious (talk) 17:49, 20 June 2006 (PDT)
If it's not easy, then just finish up what you've got. I don't want to have this drag out because then you play a perpetual game of catch-up with new blockades. --Barrister 16:30, 24 June 2006 (PDT)
Nah I really can't add code to make the colouring happen without lengthy code additions. Sorry. --Sagacious (talk) 17:36, 24 June 2006 (PDT)
