History
An inscription on a tree on the south face of the island's central mountain range reads "This island were fashioned by Birchle."
Marmara is the genus of fruitminer and barkminer moths, while Odonata is the order of insects including dragonflies and damselflies. Marmara are in the order Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) so the two parts of the island name are not directly connected.
