History
A rock on the north shore of the island reads, "This island were fashioned by Chingis."
Zechstein Island is named for the Zechstein Sea, a shallow sea that covered large regions of England and northern Europe during the last few million years of the Permian Period. The ocean gets its name from the Zechstein geological formation, as it was the ocean that formed the rocks by gradual deposition. The word comes from the German meaning "tough stone".
