User talk:Lulunz/Sante's List of useful fish names.

From YPPedia

I'm not exactly sure how this could be dealt with, but as I understood it, the acceptable fish from fishbase.org are those that come from countries where English is spoken as a major (main/only?) language. Many of the fish on this list come from non-English-speaking countries, so I'm not sure if the OMs would accept them. Maybe I'm understanding the policy, but if I'm not, does anyone see a good way to trim this list? It's large and intimidating to deal with. Darkaardvark 22:18, 23 July 2006 (PDT)

The update on the Shanghai policy doesn't mention this, so perhaps I was mistaken, but the rule "Exceptionally difficult to spell names may be denied." is still in effect, and I'd hazard that some of the foreign fish would probably fall under this rule. Not too much of an issue, though --Darkaardvark 08:23, 25 July 2006 (PDT)
Accepted fish names appear in the vernacular section of English fish names. --Sagacious (talk) 08:25, 25 July 2006 (PDT)

Under the new shanghai update, English language and vernacular are no longer requirements for fish names in ship names - and it is clear that two-word fish names are acceptable. Therefore, this list is now redundant and should be deleted - Lulunz 16:05, 7 August 2006 (PDT)

I agree, although I do appreciate the effort you put into creating it, Lulunz. --Barrister 23:21, 7 August 2006 (PDT)
Actually, I'd like to see this list stay. Seeing a list of possible names is much more useful, to me at least, than searching through a database of acceptable names. With a list, you can follow serendipity in a way that a database doesn't allow.--Fiddler 23:44, 7 August 2006 (PDT)

I can offer another option. I have been working on a list of useful fish names for use in my Ship Rename and Design service - generally fishnames that are, or are recognisably close to, English words (whatever their original language). I had been planning on keeping the list to myself, but I could be persuaded to share it. However, if I do, I'd like it to have my pirate name (Sante of Sage) on it, in the hopes of people coming to my Ship Rename and Design service. Would this be reasonable? Now that this is more of a personal list, I suggest that it be moved to User:Lulunz/List of useful fish names. --Barrister 01:14, 26 August 2006 (PDT)

Righto, but I'd still like to have Sante in there. It's a trademark thing... Bah, that's not right. Sigh. I'm still a novice at this wiki thing... if anyone else can move it there, or tell me how, I'd be thrilled... --Lulunz 13:15, 26 August 2006

This title looks fine. If you'd like me to adjust it, just let me know. --Barrister 16:02, 26 August 2006 (PDT)

No, I figured it out in the end I think, so all good now! Thanks! Lulunz 22:28, 26 August 2006 Note to self: complete up to M. 14 September 2006
