Puzzle Scoring
Contents
As ye may have noticed by now, the Puzzles lie at the heart of Puzzle Pirates, and of course everyone wants to know how well they be doing at the Puzzles.
Puzzle Standing
Standing is a measure of your Pirate's competitive prowess, calculated in a manner similar to chess ratings: each time you play a rated Puzzle against another player or non-player pirate (NPP) the result modifies your standing. Defeating a player who is rated much more highly than you will raise your standing considerably, similarly being defeated by a player with lower standing will cause a precipitous drop in your standing. In the case of duty puzzles, your standing is calculated by comparing your performance against the games played by your fellow pirates.
Standing is represented to the player as a word, rather than a number, as we do not want folks getting obsessive about the precise level of their standing. The Standing Levels are as follows:
- Able
- Proficient
- Distinguished
- Respected
- Master
- Renowned
- Grand-Master
- Legendary
- Ultimate
Experience
Experience is a more traditional measure of your Pirate's worldliness. Each time you Puzzle or perform Duties at Sea, your experience improves. The Experience Levels are as follows:
- Novice
- Neophyte
- Apprentice
- Narrow
- Broad
- Solid
- Weighty
- Expert
- Paragon
- Illustrious
- Sublime
- Revered
- Exalted
- Transcendent

Duty Reports
When a vessel reaches a League Point or Port the Duty Report is displayed for all in any puzzle to see, revealing how well everyone Puzzling performed on that League:
The Duty Report ranks are as follows, from best to worst:
- Incredible!
- Excellent
- Good
- Fine
- Poor
- Booched
Fear not, though, everyone Booches it occasionally. New Pirates who are getting to grips with things will often receive 'Learning' in duty reports.
The Performance Indicators
In each of the Duty Puzzles of Sailing, Rigging, Bilge, Carpentry and Navigation you will notice Performance Indicators, small animated icons that give you a direct idea of how well you are doing, moment to moment:
These can be useful to tell if you're doing well or not before getting to the Duty Report. Generally speaking the faster the indicator moves and the more it glows, the better yer doing.
The Font Size
When you do pull off fine moves in the Duty Puzzles you will notice that the announcements vary in font size. The font size is a very direct indicator of how good the move was.
