YPPedia talk:Redirect

From YPPedia

This page is under heavy construction, I'm still wracking my brains for YPPediaized examples to replace the Wikipedia ones. Feel free to pitch in with editing the article or to comment here on the talk page. --Guppymomma 12:25, 7 October 2005 (PDT)

Every single redirect page is now categorized. Should be plenty of examples now. ;-) --Barrister 18:34, 9 October 2005 (PDT)
You're a combination of scary and wonderful.....thanks :) --Guppymomma 15:38, 10 October 2005 (PDT)

Are you sure that it's okay from a copyright standpoint for us to use those tables, etc., even if we change them to be YPPediazed? --Lizthegrey 05:28, 15 December 2005 (PST)

I'm fairly certain that categories such as redirects from plurals and the rest are just logical categorical thingees that we could figure out coupled with how mediawiki software works with redirects. The sections after the table still need examining/reworking and even removal as some of it doesn't apply to us/is not just based on what I mention in my first sentence. What does everyone else think (especially Barrister)? --Guppymomma 07:45, 15 December 2005 (PST)
We're pretty much clear on copyright issues. But, yes, this page needs to be heavily edited. There's way too much information there considering the scope of YPPedia. --Barrister 09:55, 15 December 2005 (PST)

the ---- comments

How do those horizontal rule comments in the redirect templates work? I tried at something similar at Template:Infobox crew, but that was clearly not a good idea. – Yaten talk 14:45, 14 December 2005 (PST)

Uhm, as far as I can tell, they don't.  :) Boy am I helpful. (See http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/index.php?title=Fleet_Officer&redirect=no for an example of they don't work) --Guppymomma 15:03, 14 December 2005 (PST)
Oh, I also sorta realized that your question's answer might also be in part due to the fact that redirects have specialized behaviours. (that's why the template has to be on the same line as the redirect) --Guppymomma 15:30, 14 December 2005 (PST)
I'm actually talking about the message that shows up on the "show preview" when you edit the page. – Yaten talk 19:16, 14 December 2005 (PST)
Ah, I'm still guessing that's a behaviour directly related to how the wiki treats/translates redirects. --Guppymomma 20:52, 14 December 2005 (PST)

Island redirects

After serious contemplation, I've decided that it makes sense to create a redirect <foo> for every "<foo> island". This will make searches easier for people. Some pages will need exceptions (i.e., alpha, beta, durian), but I think this will be useful to readers of the wiki. There's one notable downside. People may create links to these redirects rather than the full page name. I have some ideas for that, but it's a problem that already exists. For example, there are numerous links to "PoE" that should be links to "pieces of eight". --Barrister 17:37, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Is there anything really wrong with that? I mean, I know linking to a redirect is bad karma, but as you noted about PoE, it doesn't really hurt anybody, so to speak. Given that this will allow the average player to search for islands far more easily, I think that esoteric price is a small one to pay (it shouldn't be too bad anyway, since we can always monitor recent changes for mislinkings). Great work. :) --Emufarmers 19:48, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Redirects to subsections

The text mentions that redirects to sections of a page don't work. However they seem to work fine for me (example: Bandana -> Clothing (hats)#Bandana). So I guess this got fixed with the new wiki version and we can remove the mention of the bug ? --Alfwyn 20:05, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Last I checked, it depended on which skin you were using. Sectional redirects worked for the standard Monobook skin, but not for the default YPPedia skin. I just tried again, and it seems to be working fine, so maybe the page could do with an update. --Belthazar451 21:24, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
