  • "Ahoy, and welcome to the YPPedia tutorial! Hopefully we'll teach you a thing or two, but for now, an easy question: would you like to learn more about the YPPedia, or would you rather just start editing?"
  1. I'd like to learn more (Goto Scene 1.0)
  2. Let's start editing! (Goto Scene 2.0)

Scene 1.0

  • "The YPPedia is like a gigantic library of information about Puzzle Pirates. We've got articles on the puzzles, the pirates, the history, the community, and almost anything else you'd ever want to know."
  • "The way the YPPedia works is that anyone who wants to can contribute... it's completely community-driven. Of course, editors check to make sure things are true and relevant, but anyone is allowed to add new stuff."
  • "The YPPedia has just over fifteen thousand articles right now, but there's always room for improvement. Users just like you make hundreds of edits every day, improving and adding new content, and making the entire YPPedia a better resource."
  • "Would you like me to repeat this section, or are you ready to move onto the next one?"
  1. Repeat it, please. (Goto Scene 1.0)
  2. Let's move on. (Goto Scene 2.0)

Scene 2.0

  • "Ok, let's get started! In this tutorial, we're going to teach you how to create a userpage. A userpage is kind of like a business card... you can put anything you like on it, and it's how people will identify you. We're going to start with a simple one. But first, I need to know... are you logged into the YPPedia yet?"
  1. Yes I am (Goto Scene 2.3)
  2. No I'm not (Goto Scene 2.2)
  3. How do I know? (Goto Scene 2.1)

Scene 2.1

  • "It's really easy to check if you're logged in or not... just scroll to the top of the page, and look at the top right corner. If shows your username, you're logged in. If it shows a number instead, you aren't."
  • "So. Are you logged in?"
  1. Yes I am (Goto Scene 2.3)
  2. No I'm not (Goto Scene 2.2)

Scene 2.2

  • "Ok, let's get you logged in. Just click at the top where it says 'Log in to edit pages' (Pause), then fill in the form with the same username and password you use to log into the game. (Pause) When you're done, click the 'Log in' button."
  1. Done! (Goto Scene 2.3)
  2. Can you repeat that? (Goto Scene 2.2)

Scene 2.3

  • "So you're logged in? Good. Take a look at the top of any page... there should be a little picture of a person with your name next to it. Right now your name is red: This means that there isn't an article there yet. Go ahead and click on your name. Once that page loads, let me know, and we can start editing."
  1. I'm at my Userpage (Goto Scene 3.0)
  2. Can you repeat that? (Goto Scene 2.3)

Scene 3.0

  • "This is your userpage... rather empty, isn't it. Let's fix that. See how, at the top, there's a tab that says 'edit this page'? (Pause) Click that tab to open the editor. (Pause) When that's loaded, you'll see a screen kind of like... well, like this one."
  • "Don't let the buttons and scrollbars and other features scare you. We just need the big text box right now. Click inside the text box, and write a few words about yourself... your pirate's name, your ocean, your crew and your flag, anything you like."
  • "When you're done entering text, let me know and we can move onto the next step."
  1. I'm done with my text... so what happens next? (Goto Scene 3.1)
  2. Can you repeat that? (Goto Scene 3.0)

Scene 3.1

  • "You're happy with your text? Well, just to be sure, let's preview it. Hit the 'Show Preview' button, and wait for the preview to load. If you'd like to change the text, go ahead and fix it, then preview it again. Otherwise, let me know and we can save your page."
  1. Ok, I'm happy with it. Let's save it! (Goto Scene 3.2)
  2. Can you repeat that? (Goto Scene 3.1)

Scene 3.2

  • "It's very important that you use edit summaries whenever you change or add things, so other editors know what you've done. Just type a few words into the Summary box. Something like 'Some stuff about me!' is great. (Pause) When you've got a summary, click the Save Page button."
  1. It's saved. Am I done? (Goto Scene 4.0)
  2. Can you repeat that? (Goto Scene 3.2)
  3. Can you repeat this whole section? (Goto Scene 3.0)

Scene 4.0

  • "You're done! Any user can now view your userpage, and the link at the top of your browser should be blue instead of red, which means there's a page at the end of the link. Congratulations on taking this step towards becoming an editor... it's a small one, but hopefully you've learned enough to get yourself started."
  • "Anyway. That's all that I can do for you. But if you want to learn more, here are a few links to some more stuff that should help you out."
  • "Oh! And I'll link you to the Sandbox, too. The Sandbox is a place where you can experiment and try new stuff without having to worry about making mistakes or breaking articles. Go ahead and play around a bit... those buttons were made for pushing!"
  • "Thanks for joining me here, and good luck with the YPPedia! Fair winds!"
