History

Tasman Reef is named for the Tasman Sea, a section of the Pacific Ocean between Australia and New Zealand. It was named for Dutch explorer Able Tasman, the first recorded European to discover Tasmania (which was also named for him) and New Zealand. The "Reef" in the island's name may come from the Great Barrier Reef, though it lies entirely within the Coral Sea - the Tasman Sea's northern border is defined being in the line of the border between the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland.
