Talk:Greeter languages
Proposed Deletion and Reformatting
As suggested by Jacquilynne / Jasandrea, I have reformatted this list to be by language instead of ocean. The new page (List of greeters by language) contains a working template to add greeters. I propose that this article be deleted, since a merge would be very difficult. This would entail that greeters would have to add themselves in again. Any discussions regarding the new page, should take place here. --Arminius 09:43, 29 January 2007 (PST)
- I've changed it to a redirect to defunct it. I'm not moving over information because some of the entries do not adhere to the new rule of being fairly fluent. --Guppymomma 17:54, 3 February 2007 (PST)
Page Title
This page title needs to be changed to something else. I think it should be on the lines of "List of...".--Arminius 13:38, 22 December 2006 (PST)
Opal Ocean
Just curious... how would you include the Opal Ocean greeters on this list, if at all?--Arminius 13:40, 22 December 2006 (PST)
- There is a German-language wiki where such a list would probably be more appropriate. --Ponytailguy 13:57, 22 December 2006 (PST)
Still Necessary?
I'm wondering if this page is still needed since just about anyone can take on Greeter duties now. (I'm concerned that this page could become very large.) Also, each user has the ability to add the languages they speak to their own pages, and those can be searched. I'm probably not seeing this from the proper angle, but thought I'd bring it up anyway. :) --Lilly 18:24, 22 December 2006 (EST)
- The thing is, mate, that the search works OK but does nothing about the actual level of language proficiency of the people listed under a language. I assume and hope that everyone putting their name on this list, and a language or two next to it, can speak this/these language(s) at a native level (e.g. es-4 for native-level Spanish). So anyone who took 2 years of High School Spanish, and all they can say is "una cervecita, por favor!", should stay off this page. That should keep the list nice and trimmed.--Arminius 20:24, 22 December 2006 (PST)
- There are five subcategories for each language found by the search page. They're labeled 1-4 (one being the least proficient) and N for native speakers. The very first page listed from the search shows everyone who can speak the language to some degree, but if you choose one of the subcategories, you can easily see the more proficient speakers of each language. I don't see the point of listing this info twice. --Lilly 12:12, 23 December 2006 (EST)
- Very few greeters understand wiki markup well enough to make effective use of those infoboxes, and very few people who do active greeting make note of that fact on their userpage. --Ponytailguy 15:03, 23 December 2006 (PST)

Order
Wouldn't it make more sense to list these in order of language than of greeter? If I'm looking for someone who speaks Spanish I should be able to look to where Spanish speakers are in the list and find them all. It's not a big deal while the list is this short, but there was a much longer list in the old greeter forums, so presumably this could quite a lot longer. --Jacquilynne / Jasandrea 18:43, 10 January 2007 (PST)
- Feel free to reformat it. --Guppymomma 08:14, 17 January 2007 (PST)
- On it. You can see User:Groundhogs/Sandbox for progress. --Arminius 07:39, 29 January 2007 (PST)
