Welcome to the Sinister Woods

From the Release Notes:

The Wolf-folk o' Woodhallow

Hark the dread howlin'! A werewolf pack has made its den on Woodhallow Isle, a new crew expedition. Fight through six waves of the pack, plundering and charting between them, and push as deep into the wood as ye dare.

Finding the isle

  • Look for a Wolf-skull Wayfinder in the Black box which was given a slight update to include the Wayfinder and summoning charms to summon the werewolf frays. The Wolf-skull Wayfinder leads ye to a werewolf ship; beat her crew in the rumble and she takes ye to the isle.
  • Near a full moon, werewolf ships also turn up while pillaging. Beat three in a row and the last leads ye to the isle.
  • Cutters and smaller only. The pack won't show itself to anything bigger.

The night

  • Six cycles: Each cycle opens with a pack of wolf-kin, some already turned werewolf by the moon. Werewolves have been enhanced by the power of the moon and will pose a tougher challenge. Win the rumble, then forage or navigate until the next pack arrives. The more of ye still standing after a fray, the more time ye get.
  • Foraging: Brings in the treasure. Clear four pieces inside the new moon piece and it fires, clearing out the rows beside it and the columns below.
  • Navigation: Fights the moon: every werewolf ye chart away is one fewer in the next pack. It plays at the middle star level whatever yer rating, with a fourth ring, and wild targets made by clearing in chains.
  • The chests: Wolf Boxes, Lunar Lockers and Dire Chests, grow richer the deeper ye go, and the lair is richest of all.

Getting out

  • Win the lair and ye keep every chest, with time to roam before the ship sails.
  • An officer can order a Retreat: the crew falls back before the next pack, keeping all earlier treasure and three quarters of the current cycle's.
  • Lose a rumble and ye keep three quarters of the earlier treasure and a quarter of the current cycle's.

More WW Items

  • Werewolf ships can yield two new pieces of furniture, the Moonlit Locker and the Pack Chest, both of which work as chests.
  • Trophies for waves survived, chests brought out, and frenetic foraging and charting.
  • The pack's lord, the Grizzled Baron, is away from Woodhallow. How mysterious...

Other Changes

  • Vampire ships now work the same way, fought by swordfight: a Vampire reliquary leads to a single ship, and near a full moon a vampire ship met while pillaging takes three battles.
  • Purser Pete now has some loot available in the Trading Post. These items need to be added by hand, so they wont appear right after the release. We'll add them as soon as we can, but given the scope of our changes, this could take some time.
  • Names of speakers in chat are clickable, opening a context menu to send tells/invites etc.
  • Names in the ahoy panel are links more often, these links can be right-clicked to access context menu.
  • Roister embiggening improvements.
  • Small chest (huntsman) and Decennium chest now provide access to yer coffers.
  • Wolf Box now acts as a doubloon exchange.
  • Werewolf Expedition trinkets now count as "Collector trinkets".

Bug fixes:

  • Chroma not always getting awarded correctly.
  • Gave Barnabas' boarded version a purple name.
  • Some furniture naming inconsistencies.
  • Roister backdrops fixed at 100% scale.
  • Water recolours on full-zoom sea battle tiles.
  • Logging back in during an expedition ashore returns ye to the expedition, and a pirate disconnected as one ends is brought back to the ship.
  • The Vessel tab shows duty icons for pirates working on the isle or in a vampire lair.

Auction House Changes

  • AH Buying and browsing
    • The category menu’s last choice, “Several categories...”, lets Browse search more than one category at once.
    • Browse’s Deeds category has a Ships menu, to find ships sold with furniture or without.
    • Ship offers and sales show a picture of the ship under sail rather than her deed.
    • While ye visit a ship for sale, the Ahoy tab shows her price and a “Buy her” button, so ye can buy her from aboard.
    • Kinds that share a name are told apart, such as Big Cat (spotted), Big Cat (rainbow) and Parrot (musketeer hat).
    • Buy now points out a big price, or one well above what such things usually sell for, before ye pay.
    • A Report button on other pirates’ offers tells staff about one that’s offensive, a scam, or wrong in some other way.
  • AH Price history
    • Price history plots each sale as a dot by date and price, above the list. It can also reach back to the house’s opening (“All time”) instead of only the past year.
    • It can show only items in a given condition, or only named or unnamed pets and familiars, and it can list what’s for sale right now.
    • Price history and suggested prices leave out sales between pirates on one account, and sales at prices far from the usual ones, so trading with yerself can’t move the prices others see.
  • AH History and My Offers
    • History shows each offer with a picture of its item, coloured by how it ended: sold, bought, cancelled or expired. A sale shows what it went for, the house’s fee, what ye received and the item’s condition. A Show menu lists just one kind of ending, or yer offers still open.
    • History totals what ye sold and bought over the past 30 days and since the house opened. My Offers totals what yer sell offers ask and what yer buy offers hold.
    • My Offers fits yer slots on a few lines, with all their expiry dates on one, however many slots ye hold.
  • AH Selling and slots
    • “Extend a slot” on My Offers lengthens yer slot that expires soonest by as long as a new slot lasts, for the price of a slot, even at the slot limit. My Offers also warns when slots expire within 30 days.
    • An offer runs its full 30 days even when its slot expires first. The slot stays until the offer ends, though the offer can’t be renewed. A new offer takes the free slot that expires soonest.
    • Renewing an offer no longer ages its item a day.
    • If staff cancel an offer, its owner is told why, even if they were away at the time.
    • Price boxes are wide enough to show 100,000,000, and a bigger price is cut back with a message saying so.
    • When a ship can’t be listed because of what’s still aboard, the message counts the charts and, past a few kinds, the cargo, rather than naming every one.
  • AH Buy offers
    • When another pirate fills yer buy offer, ye get a receipt in chat and on the Ahoy tab. It waits for ye if ye’re away.
    • On the Buy Offers form, a trinket’s picture takes the colours chosen.
  • AH Fixes and wording
    • Familiars show their pictures to female pirates too, instead of “No Icon”.
    • A sold stack’s picture shows how many were sold.
    • A sealed deed’s colours are named once, in its title, and an unnamed pet or familiar says so once.
    • Names, notes and inscriptions written with stacked accent marks no longer slip past the language filter.
    • The green for new items is brighter, in the house and in item tooltips.
    • The second “Auction House” heading under the title bar is gone, leaving more room for offers.

Small Patch

From the Release Notes:

  • Pete no longer drags the helmsman away mid-blockade. Whoever has the helm is passed by and asked later, so ye won't lose sight of the turn as it plays out.
  • A tally at a break now runs straight into the break rather than showing the puzzle for a moment first.
  • The skeleton recruiting missions now take you to the correct island.
  • Fixed a rare case where a chroma joining a stack could go missing, or leave the stack claiming more than it held. It now arrives as a stack of its own instead.

Heap 'o Changes

From the Release Notes:

Lots of changes and updates are headed to an Auction House near ye!

AH Buying and browsing

  • Browse stays up to date. It checks again every 30 seconds while ye watch, and as soon as ye come back to the tab. Only what changed is redrawn, and ye keep yer place in the list.
  • New filters on Browse: a price range, how soon an offer may end, and named or unnamed pets and familiars. Recent searches remember them, and the list ends with "Clear recent searches".
  • A Kind menu for Pets, Familiars and Deeds. Choose one kind of pet or familiar, or a class of ship. A class takes in her limited editions, so Sloop includes Roister Class sloops.
  • Find matches colours too, word by word, so "red swords" finds red Gold crossed swords.
  • The colour menus offer only the colours the chosen category comes in.
  • Sell offers and buy offers can be shown together, and a buy offer can be promoted onto the front page like a sell offer. An offer can be promoted again from My Offers once its promotion runs out.
  • Each offer says what kind of thing it is, filed as in Booty, and where a piece of furniture goes: "Furniture › Misc, for a wall", "Trinkets › Gold Box".
  • Hovering over an offer's picture or name shows the item's tooltip, as in Booty.
  • Pets and familiars are titled by kind, colours and whether they're named, as "Big Cat (gold, tiger, brown) (named)", with the name on its own line. A search for "big cat", "named" or "unnamed" finds them. Their colours are named once, in the title.
  • Mystery boxes are named by edition, such as the September 2026 Chocolate Box, rather than all reading "Mystery box".
  • A new item's condition shows in green, in its tooltip too.
  • New sell offers show at once, but Buy now stays greyed out for their first 30 seconds, so nobody can snap one up the moment it's posted.
  • Sorting by price compares the price of each thing in a stack, and recent sales of a stack say how many were in it and what each came to.

AH Price history

  • Every offer has a Price history button, and it can also be opened from the Sell tab for the item in the slot. It shows what that kind of item has sold for over the past year, and the offers for it that ended unsold.
  • Each sale is lined up in columns: price, date and colours, beside a picture of the item. Each row says whether the item was bought from a sell offer or sold to a buy offer (and what that buy offer asked for), and gives its condition and its name or inscription.
  • Each of the item's colours has a tick box. Clear one to take any colour there, as for lion-and-lion big cats in any third colour.
  • The middle price of each month's sales is shown, and Copy puts the rows on the clipboard to paste into a spreadsheet.
  • The front page shows each recent sale by kind, with its picture, category and name or inscription, and can show older sales too.

Buy offers

  • Buy offers can ask for a named or an unnamed pet or familiar, and for a least condition: used or better, or new only. The choices say where their lines fall for the kind sought: "Used or better (35% or more)", or for clothing "Used or better (at least 21 login days left)". Framed portraits, which never wear, offer no condition.
  • What a buy offer seeks is drawn in the colours asked for, on the WANTED cards and on the Buy Offers form: pets, familiars, clothing, furniture, swords, bludgeons and mugs. A pet sought in any colour shows its usual colours.
  • Kinds of clothing read properly, as "Captain's bandana hat (female)".
  • Buy Offers finds the kinds other pirates are offering or seeking, such as rogue marks, a moment after ye type.
  • "Sell to this offer" is greyed out when ye have nothing that matches, and lights up as soon as ye do.
  • When selling into a buy offer, identical items share one row, with how many ye have, and the most worn of them is the one sold.

AH Selling and slots

  • Slots are shared between all the pirates on an account, and My Offers shows yer other pirates' offers and what they sold lately. "Buy a slot" and My Offers say how many slots an account may hold.
  • A big price (100,000 PoE or more), or one far from the suggested price, must be typed a second time, and confirmations spell the price out in words. A stack's suggested price is worked out for each thing in it.
  • Asking too little tells ye the lowest price ye can ask, and asking too much the highest.
  • A ship whose hold isn't empty can't be listed, and the message says what's still aboard: "Still aboard: Bid ticket (3), Cannon balls (12), 250 PoE".
  • The listing note says only that clothing doesn't age while listed. Familiars, which never age, get no note.
  • Switching the sun panel away from Booty lets go of the item in the Sell slot, as the trading post does.
  • Sale and purchase messages in chat show the coin icon.

AH Fixes and wording

  • When the house refuses something, it says so on a red band with a blinking "!", names the item or offer it means, and clears the message once it's stale. "That offer is no longer available" now says someone may have taken it first, or it was withdrawn.
  • Posting an offer over a slow connection no longer reports the item missing from yer booty.
  • Long names, such as a sealed deed's, wrap, and Browse fits small windows without sideways scrolling.
  • German, Spanish and Japanese clients show the house in English wherever they have no translation, rather than raw message names.
  • When the house is switched off it is closed completely, unless staff open it for withdrawals during a long shutdown.
  • Wording: the sort menu says "Highest price first", Browse's second menu says "Buy offers", like the tab, and offers say "Offer ends in 30 days".

The Purser's Tally

  • Pete no longer interrupts play. A tally comes only where ye would be stopped anyway:
    • as a break begins, while the crew are still at their stations
    • once ships have engaged, before the first turn is called
    • before a crew goes ashore on an expedition
    • before a fray is joined
He will not drop in partway through a turn, and no longer calls at the end of a kraken hunt.
  • When he takes a break, the break waits on him, duty report and all, so answering costs ye none of yer rest.
  • He calls on a ship less often, leaving a crew longer between tallies.

Login pages

  • Pirate creation: the form no longer runs off the bottom of the frame. In a short window the whole page scrolls rather than the form being squeezed to fit.
  • Ocean selection: the list starts just clear of the logo, so more oceans fit in the frame.
  • Pirate selection: long status messages and the Steam achievements note stay inside the frame. The status wraps beneath yer pirates, and the achievements note sits as small print below everything.

Navigation

  • The number keys jump straight to a ring: 1 for the innermost, then 2 and 3 working outwards. They can be changed in the "Puzzle keys" options tab like the others.

Other changes

  • Spectator chat at a blockade is now /spectate (or /sp), so /sh is a shout again.
  • Blue grey chromas all stack together however ye came by them, and are named "blue grey".
  • On the Booty tab, the rows for yer equipped item and the world map use the panel's full width, so long names show in full when ye widen it.
  • Following a gallery notice on the notice board to a gallery ye've been planked from no longer strands ye between scenes. Ye stay where ye are and are told why.
  • Where the sea is recoloured, only the water is tinted, not the scenery around it.
  • Skeletal pirates can wear their familiars.
  • Booty search finds colours that aren't part of an item's name.
  • Pirate pages on the website show a familiar's colours on mouseover.

Pirates At Auction

From the Release Notes:

Small Patch

  • Auction house no longer eats entire stacks of items.
  • Purser Pete now respects CI activities and pauses them only at appropriate times. He will also hold the timer so you do not lose foraging time.
  • Scores are now more reliably frozen during a check.
  • Puzzle backdrops should no longer cause lag.

Pirates At Auction

From the Release Notes:

Auction House

The Auction House is open! Buy and sell items with any pirate on yer ocean at fixed prices, whether or not they're online. Find it at the Palace.

  • Ye can find the Auction House in various palaces.
    • Cerulean: Alpha Island and Dragon's Nest
    • Meridian: Dragon's Nest and Saltstraum Rock
    • Emerald: Admiral Island, Greenwich Island and Quetzal Island
  • Search everything for sale by name or category, filter by colour, and sort by price, newest or soonest to expire. Buy now pays the asking price on the spot; there's no timed bidding.
  • To sell, drag an item from yer Booty into the Sell tab (or Shift-click it), set yer price and post. Recent sales suggest a price. Stacks are priced per piece and potions per swig.
  • Can't find what ye want? Post a buy offer for the item, in exact colours or any colour. Yer PoE is held until the offer is filled, withdrawn or expires.
  • Offers match automatically. A new sell offer is filled at once by the best buy offer at or above its price, and a new buy offer by the cheapest matching item at or below its price, even if the other pirate is offline. Ye can also fill a buy offer yerself with Sell to this offer.
  • Posting an offer needs a free slot. Slots cost 5 doubloons (5,000 PoE on Cerulean), and are reused as yer offers finish. Browsing, buying and filling other pirates' offers need no slot.
  • There's no listing fee. When an item sells, the house keeps 2% of the price (at least 100 PoE) from the seller's proceeds, and the confirmation shows exactly what ye'll take home. Ye can also promote a sell offer on the Front Page for 7 days for 500 PoE.
  • Offers last 30 days. Renew or withdraw them from My Offers, or correct a price within 10 minutes of posting. When an offer expires, its item or PoE comes back to ye automatically, even if ye're offline.
  • Listed items are safe. They wait in a new Auctioned section of yer Booty and don't age while listed. As with a rack, listing costs a day of wear unless the item comes back the same day; clothing and familiars don't age at all.
  • Ye can list a ship that's in port with an empty hold. Other pirates' furniture, pets and wrapped gifts go back to their owners first, and ye decide whether yer own furniture sells with her. The listing names the furniture included, and buyers can Visit to look around. A listed ship can't set sail.
  • Sales appear in Ahoy!, even if they happened while ye were offline, with the price, the fee and what ye received. The History tab covers yer last 30 days, and the Front Page shows promoted offers and recent sales.
  • Names stay private. Listings and sales don't show who the seller or buyer is.
  • The following can't be sold: building deeds, wrapped gifts, anything ye're wearing or using, and items that age every day, such as wayfinders, compasses and expedition maps. Deeds and portraits can be sold but not asked for in buy offers.
  • Greenies can browse, but can't trade or buy slots until they're no longer greenies.

Purser Pete: The Purser's Tally

Purser Pete has taken to checking crew manifests to tally up those who are flesh and blood pirates. Now and then he calls for a tally: ye are shown a single picture with a question above it, and ye click what it asks ye for. If ye make a mistake, clear yer marks and place them again before answering.

  • A tally may be taken before a battle is joined, before a crew goes ashore on an expedition, or in a lull a minute or so into play after a skirmish break.
  • The whole crew is tallied at once, so nobody is singled out.
  • Each type of tally has a tutorial ye will have to complete one time before taking a station on a ship.
  • Pete requires an answer for all members of the crew. Until ye finish, Pete will stand between ye and a duty station.
  • Pete may slip ye something for yer trouble. Pirates aren’t guaranteed to earn something if they answer correctly, but it will help. There are no penalties for answering incorrectly at the moment, either for distracted humans or more clanky pirates.
  • Any trinkets you do earn can be traded for items at the Trading Post. The items ye can acquire are TBA and may change as time goes on.

Real blockade spectating

  • Any pirate on an island under blockade can now watch it, with no ship needed. Go to Notice Board → Blockades and use the "Watch from the shore" section. "Stop watching" puts ye back on the island, and boarding a ship, entering a building or the round ending also ends the watch.
  • A "Board only" checkbox hides the sidebar and chat band so the blockade has the whole window.
  • The header shows each team in its own colour with its flag and score, and marks teams that are present but not contesting as "(not contending)". It also shows the turn and the seconds to the next one, the time left in a break, and a warning before the blockade restarts. When the round is played out the header says so, and then ye are put back ashore.
  • Spectators get a chat of their own (Spectators mode, or /shore). The ships in the fight never hear it, while watchers still hear the battle chat.
  • Spectator Shout Outs are on the Ahoy! tab: Bravo!, Bingo, Booched, etc are available. Click one, then click the board to place it. A second mark of yers on the same square replaces the first. "Don't show shout outs" turns them off for ye.
  • Options → Graphics → Blockade view sets the size a blockade opens at: Standard, Large (2x) or Huge (3x). Blockades remember their own zoom, separate from sea battles.

Login Screen Changes

  • A new login frame, gilded, fits the window from 100% to 200% and refits once ye stop resizing. A larger frame shows more of yer accounts rather than larger ones.
  • The account list has a Find field and a Recent / A-Z sort. Ctrl-click an account (command-click on a Mac) to pin it to the top. Accounts can be given a nickname, set in Options → General. Pins and nicknames are kept on that computer only. Double-click an account or press Enter to log on.
  • The ocean picker is now one list, with yer current ocean first.
  • "Pick yer pirate" fits a whole row of pirates even in the smallest frame.
  • The back arrow on the check-your-email page returns ye to entering yer email.

QOL: Portraits setup dialog

  • Added a filter for minimum pirates.
  • Portraits are now sorted by size, then name.
  • The dialog now shows a thumbnail of the selected background.

QOL: Booty, inventory and furniture

  • Chromas now stack, up to 20.
  • Greatly improved loading of large amounts of inventory.
  • The Sunshine panel's booty content now expands when the panel is expanded.
  • Booty search now matches colours and takes multiple terms separated by commas.
  • Added new categories for chroma and designs. Pets have been moved.
  • Trinkets are now sorted into more categories.
  • The Trading Post now fetches from open categories first.
  • For pets, "trash" now reads "release".
  • Openable items, potions and sealed deeds can no longer be trashed.
  • The storage dialog now shows how full it is.
  • A preview is now shown while customising Collection cases.

QOL:Gameplay and UI

  • Added puzzle backdrops and a consistent frame.
  • Added a search field and archipelago filter to Yer vessels.
  • Added employed-at icons.
  • Fixed the duty performance log in expos. It now covers labor and names its source.
  • "Bosses" now get purple names.
  • Tidied up the puzzle tutorial.
  • The intro mission arrow now points at the right tab.
  • Updated the New Pirate Help links.
  • Familiars on the pirate page now show colours on hover.
  • Pets in the Trading Post now show colours on hover.
  • A party now ends when its building changes hands, instead of staying on the notice board under the old owner's name.

Puzzle size and the game window

  • Puzzle Size replaces the Display size panel and has one selector. Sizes too large for yer screen are greyed out, and the window resizes to match as ye choose. A preview shows the puzzle at that size with room for the Ahoy! panel beside it.
  • The window remembers its size for each account on this computer, so pirates running several accounts no longer find them all opening at the same size. If ye would rather they all matched, tick "Lock all accounts on this machine to this resolution" in Options.
  • Options' size list shows the window's actual size, and picking a size resizes the window at once.
  • Ctrl+O opens Options from anywhere, in case yer scaling settings leave ye marooned.
  • A puzzle too big for the window now grows the window to show the whole board, as far as the screen allows. The grown size isn't remembered, so the game opens at yer usual size next time.
  • When a new puzzle size is waiting on a restart, the Puzzle Size panel, Options and the first puzzle ye open all say which size ye're actually playing at until ye restart.
  • In small windows, dialogs such as Options now scroll sideways as well as down instead of being cut off at the edges.
  • With HD art on, each screen size is listed once in Options instead of twice.

Art and interface

  • Art that has no proper double-size version is scaled more crisply, so puzzle pieces and icons keep their sharp edges. Swords, inventory icons and pirate faces now scale with the rest of the interface.
  • With HD art on, Swordfight now uses its redrawn artwork as standard; it no longer needs the Alternate puzzle art option.
  • Fixed inconsistent click and scaling arithmetic across several puzzles.
  • Fixed island map category labels wrapping when hovered, and the window shifting about while logging on.
  • Clicking the bird view of the island from the notice board returns ye to the island the same way, whether ye had just logged on or opened the board afterwards.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed "invisible" pets.
  • Fixed the navigation puzzle sometimes having no targets.
  • In Patching, tiles placed off the board now snap back.
  • Fixed a Shipwrightery tile getting stuck behind another.
  • Fixed the Alchemistry piece under the mouse not rotating.
  • Fixed carpentry textures, Pufferfish and Haul chests at certain sizes.
  • Fixed another case of the Minimap getting stuck.
  • A shoppe or building changing hands, such as when a blockade hands over an island, now shows its new owner and managers straight away.
  • Event blockades no longer require a vessel's voyage type to be set to "Blockade".
  • Fixed links not opening in the default browser on Linux.
  • Fixed the client hanging when ye try to quit.

Display Size Update

From the Release Notes:
  • Automatically chosen display settings:
    • Your game window size and puzzle scale will be adjusted once based on your monitor's resolution.
    • "Lock panel sizes" will be turned off so you can adjust your panel layout after the resize.
  • Review your settings with the Display Size preview:
    • After logging into your account, but before choosing a pirate, the Display Size preview will automatically appear. This is a one-time set-up process that will help make sure people are using the best options for their system.
    • You can preview and adjust the game window size and puzzle scale, then click "Apply" to save your choices.
    • Changes to puzzle scale made in the preview require a client restart before they take effect in-game.
    • The automatic adjustment and preview happen only once for your saved client preferences, across all production oceans. Switching oceans will not reset your choices or show the preview again.

  • Vessels now enforce the same boarding restrictions for joining during a break as they do when entering from the start.
  • You can no longer enter a blockade if your voyage type is not set to "blockade".

Dueling Debuts

From the Release Notes:
  • Introduced a new game mode for swordfighting: Dueling.
    • When dueling, players can see both puzzle boards side by side.
    • Duels are supported in challenges, tournaments, and table games.
    • Pirates can also spectate dueling matches using the Notice Board.
    • The Notice Board shows the 30 most recently completed duels since the last reboot.
  • Brigand King trinket collection cases have been added to the Trading Post.
    • Before placing, collection cases are "customized" to show a sub-collection. When customized the collection case changes appearance to match that theme.
    • Collection cases can hold one of each variant of each relevant trinket.
    • Collection cases can share a scene, if they have different collections set. Eg 1 x Admiral Finius collection and 1 x Vargas the Mad could share the same scene.
    • Collection cases can share a scene with a regular display case!
  • Puzzle difficulty selection:
    • You can now choose your own puzzle difficulty. A new "Difficulties" tab in the options panel provides a slider with tooltips describing what changes at each level.
    • If your experience in a puzzle is too low, your chosen difficulty is capped at your normal calculated difficulty.
    • Choosing a difficulty lower than your calculated one reduces your score slightly.
    • You must be narrow in order to adjust your puzzle difficulty.
