"Language" template in User page

Ahoy! Thanks for the edits you've made. If you encounter any other commonly asked questions that ought to be answered in the Yppedia, I hope you'll continue to include those.

I noticed you used the "Language" template in your User page, but it looks like you added into the page not as the very first thing. I don't know if you noticed it, but if that template is not the very first thing in the page, the info-box won't be vertically aligned quite right.

Again, welcome aboard! Thanks, again. -- Franklincain (t/c) 10:54, 15 August 2013 (PDT)

Cheers for the tip, I'll have a look at it. It's not something I mind too much about though, the main aim of editing my User page was to stop my name popping up like a red angry link and whispering subliminally for the edit to be reverted :p
I'll do my best re the answering questions, please keep the feedback coming in on things I don't get quite right, it's much appreciated. Thanks Franklin! --Therobotdude 11:06, 15 August 2013 (PDT)

sentence case

Ahoy! Just as a heads-up, one of the local rules is that we're supposed to use sentence-case for capitalization, especially for section headings. Don't recall if anyone actually wrote that down in the policies and guidelines. (Personally, I'm more comfortable using title-case myself, but this was decided long before I showed up around here.) Any way, wanted to let you know. Thanks, again! -- Franklincain (t/c) 06:44, 16 August 2013 (PDT)

Cheers, i'll do my best to adhere to that then. It makes sense as a policy if (as I believed true) titles here are case-sensitive after the first letter? --Therobotdude 06:56, 16 August 2013 (PDT)
Aye, wiki-code is case-sensitive. :-P   (And as an old-time former mainframe programmer, you have no idea how frustrating I find that!) Thanks. -- Franklincain (t/c) 07:11, 16 August 2013 (PDT)
I hear ye, I've only done a small amount (and that in C) but I suppose it's all syntax at the end of the day. It would be nice if there were a tool (or bot) to deal with titles that don't conform etc to save you the effort of trawling through. The editor writes, the bot checks/corrects. Is there anything like that implemented here yet? --Therobotdude 07:37, 16 August 2013 (PDT)

Problems with file uploads

Hi, I can't upload this screencap to illustrate Portrait#Competition_portraits, and wondered if you had any ideas. I am told that "The file extension does not match the MIME type" - although the file passes all checks for validity. Do you know if this is a common bug? Thanks in advance!--Therobotdude 15:52, 21 August 2013 (PDT)

The file was misnamed. It's actually a PNG. File:Competition portrait screencap.png PNG is a better format anyway, for screen captures. Chupchup 17:58, 21 August 2013 (PDT)
Since this question doesn't have anything to do with me, I'm moving it onto your talk page. ;-)
-- Franklincain (t/c) 19:13, 21 August 2013 (PDT)
Ah, doh. And there I was wondering why it'd only save in PNG format! Thanks for your help both of you :) --Therobotdude 02:25, 22 August 2013 (PDT)

questions for help should be on Forums

Because we can not know when someone specific might drop out for a while, it's best to direct questions to the newsgroup on the Forums specific to the Yppedia. ;-)   Now, if it's a question regarding an article or template specifically under that person's aegis, that's a good reason to direct one's inquiry directly to them. But if it's just a general question, not related to something within their bailiwick, then it's more effective to go to the newsgroup up front.

Hope this helps! -- Franklincain (t/c) 18:48, 21 August 2013 (PDT)

Thanks for the thorough explanation - I'll make sure I direct all relevant questions there. (Sorry for causing trouble!) Cheers. --Therobotdude 02:45, 22 August 2013 (PDT)

Thanks

I just wanted to thank you for your consistent (and substantial) edits to YPPedia. I am no administrator, just a normal user, and it's good to see someone actively helping make the wiki better. Jlh0605 11:52, 24 September 2013 (PDT)

Ah, thank you! I appreciate it - and I should thank you in return for making sure the wiki keeps up with releases and stays factually correct :P (I had no idea swabbies stole PoE from battles. I'll keep a closer eye on them in future). I'm just a normal user too, and for the most part all I can do is splurge words haphazardly onto pages, but it's good fun! Hopefully my edits are making some kind of dent (in the workload that is, not in the server's throughput) --Therobotdude 12:45, 24 September 2013 (PDT)
Yeah, they are tricky - they take their cut before we see it ... sneaky. I'm glad to see someone making the changes I wish I had the time and effort to make. Jlh0605 15:34, 24 September 2013 (PDT)
I would also like to thank you for your consistent and substantial edits here. Your tireless effort to bring articles up to standards and your wholly uncontroversial methods of editing are a great asset to YPPedia and I greatly appreciate working with you. Chupchup 11:34, 9 January 2014 (PST)
You're very welcome. Thank you in return for putting up with me being here on the wiki - you and the other editors have made it a very welcoming and forgiving environment to work in. I also really appreciate it that you and others have taken the time to explain and fix my (sometimes surprisingly stupid) mistakes, and I hope there will be far fewer of those from me in the future! --Therobotdude 13:42, 9 January 2014 (PST)

Boarder article - what should go there?

The article for boarders doesn't exist, I noticed in the swordfight updates you made. What do you think we should do with that? Redirect to fray? That's another disambiguation though... needs some content written... Chupchup 11:54, 16 April 2014 (PDT)

Yeah, I was unsure what to do there to be honest - Atlantis dragoons and HS specters are pretty similar things, they're all covered individually but not as an overall concept. I agree some content needs to be written some way or other. One potential direction is to make boarder a full-blown article with subsections for boarders from all SMH types. another is to write a short piece a la monster that disambiguates the three. Yet another option is to include a short section about the boarder mechanics stuff directly into the Sea Monster Hunt article (since boarders are a common element), and have boarder redirect to that section. Leaning towards the last one personally, although that would probably mean the dragoon article would need to be merged into both SMH and Atlantis.. (ugh) --Therobotdude 15:47, 16 April 2014 (PDT)

ship-tracking report

Ahoy! Dropping you a message, to let you know, that of all the other mates who have written to me about that ship-tracking report I've been maintaining, not one of them has ever used any kind of acronym when referring to the report. Thanks, any way. -- Franklincain (t/c) 14:08, 25 June 2014 (PDT)

I might be the first :) I couldn't remember the URL when linking someone to it today, but TAYS stuck in my head and I was able to figure it out from there. YPPedia.puzzlepirates.com/TAYS is also a far shorter link than YPPedia.puzzlepirates.com/Track_All_Yer_Ships, which is nice when you want to link it over PP! --Therobotdude 14:58, 25 June 2014 (PDT)
Posted a compromise solution, just now. Acronym-for-shortcut (redirect) will be OK by me, so long as the acronym stays out of the report's article proper. OK by you? ;-) Thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 18:29, 25 June 2014 (PDT)

Speaking of deletion...

Any objection to deleting Six On The Beach (building)? Nothing of value will be lost it is a cut-and-paste of Purgatory (building) and apparently, the building is renamed back to Purgatory, so this article is totally redundant. Chupchup 14:13, 27 July 2014 (PDT)

Seems fair - tis done. I think that's the last of the easy deletions, too; all the others involve chasing people for confirmation or merging things in strange ways! --Therobotdude 16:13, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
How much work needs to be done on Kitty? I will look at it since I am the one who nominated it. Chupchup 16:16, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
I think I have merged all the relevant bits into Lurv so that Kitty can be removed and make way for a page move. Chupchup 16:22, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
Kitty was one of the requests I looked at first and thought nope I ain't doing this :P. But it looks like you got everything, I'll make way now. --Therobotdude 16:51, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
Now I have a stupid question. Take a look at the article and the two infoboxes. Tell me why {{Infobox pirate}} (Usage) uses the PAGENAME to find the portrait and not the piratename field? Chupchup 16:55, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
Aha, I just found out how to use altname=. Nevermind! Chupchup 16:57, 27 July 2014 (PDT)
Bad documentation strikes again! :P --Therobotdude 17:04, 27 July 2014 (PDT)

BlockadeTOC

I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure it's worth almost doubling the size of the template just to ensure that it auto-updates so that people don't forget to do it, because if we don't have to touch it for two years, then we will forget when the end of that time rolls around... --Belthazar451 16:24, 9 August 2014 (PDT)

I think the size and the number of parser function calls probably dont matter when compared with the size of the blockade history pages. New editors might find it confusing to update though, and potentially people might forget as you say :p. But once someone remembers, it should be good for another few years. It's one of those fiddly things that I kept forgetting to do - a TOC that updates with the calendar months/years just made it that bit easier. I can document how to keep it updated for another few years (literally a copy and paste and changing a few year values). Perhaps we can start a discussion on the talk page/forums as well to get some opinions. Finally I do apologise for getting the code wrong the first time - and leaving a stray magic number in the second time! --Therobotdude 00:13, 10 August 2014 (PDT)

Ship listings on USER pages are allowed

Hi, you commented on my userpage that I wasn't allowed to have a ship list on my user page per policy, but that policy is not directed at userpages, but at pirate pages instead as confirmed by [Belthazar451] [here]. I've given the same answer on my userpage talk, but I don't know if you get a message of that :) Thought I'd better let you know :) The confusion probably comes from the fact that my username (User:Scrappyilse) for the Yppedia is the same as one of the pirate names I've got (Scrappyilse), but they in fact have two different pages.

Cerulean Blockade History

Nono, I didn't mean the table of contents, I meant that someone said they added the weekend of Sept 6/7th, but the actual logs of Jorvik and Eta were not posted, nor was the table updated to reflect W/L. Sorry for that mixup, and I was just teasing. :D

-Yes, I knew about that part, hehe, thanks! :^)

--Commented in your proposed thread, I think it's a good idea, (other than the time frame, especially for Cerulean). :^)

WTS

Ahoy! I wanted to try out Where's That Ship and downloaded the Linux executable. Unfortunately, I'm on a 32-bit kernel and the executable is compiled for x64. So is there any chance of a 32-bit compatible version being published? Thanks. Chupchup 22:05, 18 September 2014 (PDT)

I've compiled it for 32bit and uploaded it here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11279022/wts_32bit --Guipsp 07:39, 19 September 2014 (PDT)
You beat me to it - although I have added a few more functionalities to it now and will upload within the hour :P. 64-bit machines are backwards-compatible with 32-bit right? I think from now on I might just compile for 32-bit. --Therobotdude 08:44, 19 September 2014 (PDT)

Rsugden

You know, Rsugden is a Ringer of some variety. No idea who, exactly, but I rather suspect all the little pages and templates he's been creating are intended to test the issues we've been having with the wiki. --Belthazar451 04:47, 11 August 2015 (PDT)

Yep, I believe you're right. What I've done is try to categorise them so they don't get lost, and save the unique test things to user space. --Therobotdude 06:07, 11 August 2015 (PDT)
