Rank Box

Ahoy! I like the template ye have created. How about adding to it to include the flag rank as seen here. Maybe with a {{Rank box|officer|monarch}} syntax, but would work without the flag rank too. -- Cedarwings (t/c) 11:43, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

Good idea! -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 14:26, 6 April 2007 (PDT)
Whee, done, and it even seems to work. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 15:49, 6 April 2007 (PDT)

How dare you re-add a fixed rank box to Arminius's page!!! (note sarcasm) Thanks dude! --Arminius 20:09, 20 May 2007 (PDT)

Hehe. The problem was caused by an implementation change I, er, implemented without properly looking over the results. Turns out it had removed a line break, causing it to booch. Next time, feel free to leave me a note about it being booched, too :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 12:19, 21 May 2007 (PDT)

Page proposed for deletion with no reason on it

Ahoy! You proposed to have Clothes_puzzle_game deleted, but have not given a reason for it. While it might be obvious (I skimmed the page), if you're going to propose a page for deletion, you should take the time to at least give a reason. --Thunderbird 21:51, 12 April 2007 (PDT)

It seems that you agree with me that no reason was needed in that case. When a reason is needed, I give one. In a case like that one where it is obvious irrelevant nonsense, there seems little need to create a talk page just to say that. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 21:59, 12 April 2007 (PDT)

Travelling / Traveling

Regarding the change you made to Route color, the spelling depends on what dictionary you use. USA It is with one L, British with two L's. -- Vorky 18:27, 26 April 2007 (PDT)

Indeed. I thought we used American spelling here, but it's not a big deal. Just Firefox highlighted it for me, so...  ;-) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 18:33, 26 April 2007 (PDT)
Yes, Firefox highlighted it for me too, but the other way around, but then I usually have it set to British spelling (as I live in New Zealand). -- Vorky 18:48, 26 April 2007 (PDT)
Ah, I see, lol. I agree two L's makes more sense, but my dictionary tells me otherwise... *shrugs* -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 18:50, 26 April 2007 (PDT)

Page watching

I noticed one edit summary on your admin request page. You don't need to make an edit to watch a page, just click the handy-dandy watch button on the top row. --Thunderbird 21:13, 26 April 2007 (PDT)

Wow, I can't believe I'm that stupid. Thanks so much! -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 10:32, 27 April 2007 (PDT)

Re: vandalism warning

Ahoy. Calling a user's edits vandalism is a little discouraging especially when they only have 5 edits to their name. As the Wikipedia states in its vandalism article, "Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism." I believe in this case the {{test}} (Usage) warning or something along it's lines, would have been more appropriate. With the amount of new information being added to the Yppedia every day, we should try to encourage and guide these new users towards contained deemed appropriate. Fair winds!

You are, of course, correct, and I agree. I should have left something more like Ahoy there! There are already proper articles concerning the topics of the pages you recently created, so I marked them for deletion. Please consult the Style guide for more information on how articles should appear on the YPPedia, and the Wanted pages list for a few ways with which you can contribute to the YPPedia. Thanks, and fair winds! Or something like that. I will try my best to prevent such a lapse in future. Huge apologies for the moment, however, will have to suffice. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 21:23, 5 May 2007 (PDT)

Warnings

Hidey ho. I understand the frustration, but when you find yourself losing your temper, it's probably time to step back for a moment and allow someone else to step in (or leave a note on an active looking admin's page asking them to look into it). This is actually something admins do as well, asking someone less angered or upset or tired to take care of something. Thunderbird is taking care of our extreme multiple edits friend right now. --Guppymomma 11:31, 19 May 2007 (PDT)

I understand that's how it looks, and I apologize. Before that last message I tried to restrain myself, and looking back on it, it seems to me, anyway, I didn't do too bad. By the time I left the last one, however, he had clearly completely ignored the previous three, so I was just trying to say it in a way that would, hopefully, attract his attention. Before leaving the following one, I looked around on several oceans for an on-line admin to ask for some advice; I did not find one, so I just sort of gave up. Thanks for the tip, though! :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 12:07, 19 May 2007 (PDT)

Template Edits

If you edit a template, please ensure that it does not break the template. Your edits to {{Greeterlang}} (Usage) broke the template, as your revert was not a full revert. Guppy just fixed it a bit ago with an actual revert. Also, if you wish to edit a template that is used on many pages (such as {{Rank box}} (Usage)), please do your edits in a sandbox first. Editing a template that affects that many pages clogs up the job queue and places unnecessary load on the server, especially when you make test edits several times. This is one reason most of the core templates are locked. --Thunderbird 10:38, 25 May 2007 (PDT)

Alternatives to Deletion

Just a word in your ear: even if an article isn't on the face encyclopedic or is otherwise inappropriate for the YPPedia, there are situations where deletion isn't the best answer. For example, if someone creates a guide in the wrong place, it's probably more helpful to move it to their userspace (User:Name/Guide) than issuing a prop del. Aside from minimizing confrontation ("WAI U DELET MI PAEG? I SUE U!!!"), if you throw it into their userspace they can work on it to their heart's content without it injuring anyone, and when they get it ready, it can be moved back into the main namespace, and that's much more productive in all respects (we get more pages with better information, and they get more skilled as contributors) than having it deleted.

Keep up the good work, and fair winds! --Ponytailguy 13:48, 26 May 2007 (PDT)

First off, thanks for being so polite and nice about it, unlike all the other admins seem to have been lately. Assuming you are referring specifically to the article previously titled Earn PoE, it seemed that beyond missing all basic format elements required by an encyclopedia article, all its content was redundant and presented in much, well, better form at Starting out. However, I agree that it is harmless in its current location. Thanks! -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 13:59, 26 May 2007 (PDT)

Linking

Is it appropriate to linkify every instance of a crew or flag or pirate page or should it only be linked the first occurance and not thereafter? See Dylancecka for reference.--Biliter01 20:28, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

Only the first instance of any article should be linked in the body of the article. Infoboxes and various header messages (not the first line of an article) do not count as in the body of the article, if you see what I mean. Additionally, there seems to be nothing wrong with linking to the same article from within the same infobox. Hope that helps! -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 22:17, 27 May 2007 (PDT)
Ah, just noticed this. Cedarwings put it better than I did. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 22:23, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

Disambguation links

Ahoy mate, while I agree that Suicide King makes more logical sense. What happens if/when it becomes a situation like Karma in which there are multiple crews across multiple oceans and differenitating them by their Ocean is more applicable?--Biliter01 22:21, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

Then it would become like Mercenaries, with Suicide King (OCEAN_crew). -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 22:25, 27 May 2007 (PDT)
So why not make it (OCEAN_crew) in the first instance? Then the handy dandy ocean template with the type that you prototyped could be used for the link if it is implemented :-) -- Vorky 22:45, 27 May 2007 (PDT)
Although I agree with you that that is more sensible, well, I think we've been over this before :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 23:45, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

A couple questions

Ok, I am very experienced in the game but I only know the basics of Yppedia. I am trying to put in a portrait of the Silverfur of Sage and the only one that seems to be uploaded to the Yppedia is of the Silverfur of Hunter. While both are my pirates, the portrait of Silverfur of Sage was taken as something more than filling space in the pirate info page. All the Silverfurs that exist are mine but the ones not on Sage are just used mostly to play around when I don't feel like dealing with hearties and crew issues. How do I get a portrait of the correct Silverfur on the pirate page? Also, how do you get the time and date stamp when you post a reply? I don't imagine that you type it out every time.Silverfur

Ah. Do you want the Sage Silverfur portrait to appear instead of the Hunter one? If so, just upload the correct file as a new version of the existing one. Otherwise, you will not be able to have it display in the infobox.
As for signing, what I have is under preferences, check "Raw signature," and type in {{Sig|[your username]}}. Now whenever you want to sign, typing ~~~~ will make a signature identical to my own appear.  :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 08:59, 17 June 2007 (PDT)
Type {{Sig|[your username]}} where, in the nickname field? Silverfur
Oh aye, sorry. Replacing [your username] with your username, too :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 19:01, 17 June 2007 (PDT)

Your Featured Article Contest Entry

Looks good. Just to let you know, I went in and just copy/pasted all your info using the template I had set up. Forgive my anal retentiveness but I use the "What Links Here" part of the template to track a couple things so I need to be able to match up every entry with everything on that list. Should still look identical. Thanks for the entry! --Muffynz 20:51, 19 June 2007 (PDT)

Ahh, ok. The reason I did that was the "More on Might ring..." looked very bad, so I wanted it to say "More on Might rings...". Thanks!  :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 20:54, 19 June 2007 (PDT)
You could always title your entry "Might rings" instead. There already is a redirect to might ring that would take care of a missing link if that was your concern. -- Cedarwings 22:47, 19 June 2007 (PDT)
My reason for not doing that is titles are always singular. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 23:33, 19 June 2007 (PDT)
In wanting to keep things as simple as possible, I'm gonna say leave it as is with Might ring singularly. I don't want to add one more thing for the average Joepirate to have to fill out for the template even if it is simple. If your article wins, or any article for that matter that the "More on" section is better suited as plural, we'll make it so for the import to the front page. For now, just stick with what we've got. Thanks! :) --Muffynz 18:38, 20 June 2007 (PDT)
I gotcha. Sorry, been very tired today and I didn't look at your template well enough to understand it at the time. I see that you coded it so if it's not used (which by 95% of the community who know nothing about wiki editing, it won't) it doesn't effect the overall look of it. I've edited the main template to include the link title section and put your article back on that template. Thanks for your patience with me on this one, my brain not functioning fully today. --Muffynz 21:22, 20 June 2007 (PDT)
No problem at all :) Sorry if my message came across as rude in some way, I rewrote it at least 3 times trying to minimize its brusqueness. Thanks :) Great event! I was just thinking about maybe doing a featured article thingy when this popped up in the recent changes... Made me very happy!  :) -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 22:18, 20 June 2007 (PDT)

Template:Infobox flag/

Just curious what the purpose of this page is, as I can't see one. -- Cedarwings (t/c) 17:32, 22 June 2007 (PDT)

Yeah, uh, that's a good question. Not entirely sure... I think it had something to do with allowing people to leave numberofislands blank without killing stuff. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 19:37, 22 June 2007 (PDT)

Be patient with other editors

Ahoy! I know that I have mentioned this before, but according to the Editors' Code of Conduct it is recommended that you wait 15 minutes (not 1 minute) before jumping in to edit something. If the reason for jumping in is to clean up vandalism, by all means go ahead, but a couple of extra links is not going to kill anyone if it is not corrected for a few hours. New editors can be confused by edit conflicts which can occur when someone hops in too quickly to make a correction to their edit. Fair winds! -- Cedarwings (t/c) 01:08, 1 July 2007 (PDT)

What? My problem is the time it shows for edits is off by an hour, so when it's late and I'm tired I often forget that. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 01:10, 1 July 2007 (PDT)
Wheee.... finally fixed it. It won't happen again. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 01:12, 1 July 2007 (PDT)
