Suggestions for the Main Page

Wondering if ocean status plus last update would be something handy for the main page. Thoughts? Rappak 21:26, August 9, 2005 (PDT)

Generally the status is updated officially on the forum.[1] I'm not sure what you mean by last update...we do track the releases which includes the date & what was fixed/changed. --Guppymomma 21:38, 9 August 2005 (PDT)
True. I wonder how the Wiki would be effected if the forum server goes down again. It might be helpful if the forums aren't available and other things crash. Nevermind on the last part, drinking and thinking aren't working well tonight.Rappak 21:40, August 9, 2005 (PDT)

Can we get a link to "Shoppe" on the main page? --Behindcurtai 15:29, 3 March 2006 (PST)

Flag Yellow Pages (and perhaps crew, too?) use to be on the Main Page and that was quite handy. Could that be added again? --Chemicalgirl 04:43, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

The Yellow Pages have flags, crews & shoppes with websites. I've added it under community unless there are objections. --Guppymomma 06:36, 20 April 2006 (PDT)

How about the ocean maps on the main page? --Behindcurtai 17:29, 16 June 2006 (PDT)

Hmmm that would be easiest if we had a Maps category for the arch/ocean maps. Let me look and see if we do. If we do, I'll add a link to Maps after Ocean or something. If we don't, I'll fix it tomorrow or maybe someone will category 'em for me :) and I'll add the link tomorrow. --Guppymomma 21:13, 16 June 2006 (PDT)

How about a link for houses along with ship, shops, and puzzles? --Behindcurtai 19:31, 18 September 2006 (PDT)

I think that's a very good idea. Support. --AtteSmythe 08:47, 19 September 2006 (PDT)
Implemented per consensus. --AtteSmythe 09:05, 25 September 2006 (PDT)

This is just an idea like that, but mabe we should have a "screenshot of the day/week/month/wathever". --garash

Parley links for blockades?

This has been in the back of my head for a while, but I didnt really see a use for it until now. Would be be desirable to link to intent threads from the blockade history pages? (That seems the most central spot.) I think it'd help a lot for event blockades, massive blockades (the last Jorvik?)and for people who are going back and trying to see how the political climate has changed. Right now it's noted that it was an event, but not WHAT event. The threads can be rough to find after the moment has passed because so few people refer to an upcoming blockade as Eclipse II or whatnot. It's simply "the Eclipse blockade" or worse, "The ____ Event." In the future, if we stick the links in there as the blockade histories are updated, it won't be rough to maintain. And yes, I'm willing to go fishing for the old ones to fill out the history as best as I can. Just - not tonight. Zava's tired. :) --Zava 23:23, 16 June 2006 (PDT)

Since there's an effort going on to revamp the layout of these pages, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to add in a space for associated forum links. It could get slightly messy though since we can't use the footnote template within the template, but I think it's a worthwhile bit of info. --Guppymomma 07:48, 17 June 2006 (PDT)

Nerf "famed"?

Given that every greenie and their roommate now qualifies for a page, I think we can finally nuke the "Famed" label. It's purely stylistic and has actually caused us some headaches in past. Permission to baleet? --Ponytailguy 18:03, 22 June 2006 (PDT)

Well, yes, it's purely stylistic: It's one of those half-sardonic things that just goes well with pirates. What's better than a pirate? A famed pirate, of course, arr! Is there any particular place it's caused trouble in the past? The reason I would see for getting rid of it is that none of the other things next to it have an adjective: Like, "mighty flags," "courageous crews," "famous pirates." For consistency. Of course, this might be part of the Nemo-approved main page layout, so it may require his authorization to change it. --Emufarmers 18:20, 22 June 2006 (PDT)
It's because certain people (no names, but they are out there) don't think everyone at the end of the link is "famed". And they're not entirely incorrect. Anal-retentive, to be sure (It's harmless and FUN! Since when is 100% functional accuracy good community-building policy?) but no less correct. --Ponytailguy 18:27, 22 June 2006 (PDT)
I didn't expect to, but I agree with nuking the label. It's the only category on the main index with a (superlative) adjective. --AtteSmythe 08:57, 23 June 2006 (PDT)
I'll interpret the silence as endorsement, then... it's a minor enough change. A few hours left to object, though. --Ponytailguy 10:05, 23 June 2006 (PDT)
Well...*sniffle,* technically it's not a superlative adjective (that would be "most famous"), but...Yeah, it seems to be consistent. Are you sure you're permitted to touch it, though? You didn't really answer my question as to whether or not it was part of the designated format of the main page. I've gotten yelled at for taking silence for a day to mean anything; don't be in a hurry here. :P --Emufarmers 10:13, 23 June 2006 (PDT)
You didn't ask a question, you made a statement. Nemo has approved the main page, yes, but if we're allowed to correct minor technical things in the official documentation, I think I can get away with omitting a superflous word from the main page. --Ponytailguy 10:28, 23 June 2006 (PDT)
It's a very minor one word change. It's completely different than asking for a new box or a new arrangement of the boxes which would be considered an actual design change. There's no need to be overly technical about a minor wording change point. The change is fine and I agree with it. In fact, we'll be adding a link to maps after I or someone gets around to filling that category with an archipelago maps subcategory to flesh it out more. --Guppymomma 11:12, 23 June 2006 (PDT)

Featured Article

Can we change the featured article? It seems slighty silly having the same one there for months... --Angelbeaver 15:01, 5 July 2006 (PDT)

If by months you mean two days short of a single month, sure it's been up for a while. Feel free to propose the next one over at Template talk:Featured article. --Guppymomma 15:24, 5 July 2006 (PDT)
Yes, I've been the chief, er, poker on that subject; ideally, I'd like to see a new featured article every week or two, but given that this is only our third featured article period, one a month would probably be a laudable goal for now. :) --Emufarmers 22:09, 5 July 2006 (PDT)
Three months is roughly a month right? :P I just couldn't help that feel a month is too ling, I though a week or a fortnight woult be better. --Angelbeaver 13:55, 7 July 2006 (PDT)
Template:Featured article was changed to the blockade article on June 7. That's exactly a month ago today. You can verify this yourself by looking here. Now that we've established that it really has only been a month, what do you suggest the next featured article should be? --Barrister 14:23, 7 July 2006 (PDT)
I'll stop with the jokes now. I was going to suggest Hunter, but there aren't many pictures that could be used. So how about Portrait? A lot of work has gone into that section and it's accompanying articles, there is also a wealth of pictures to use. I get the impresstion from the forums tha it is little used, which is a shame so it would be nice to increase awareness of that chunk of the Wiki.--Angelbeaver 14:56, 7 July 2006 (PDT)
Ok, it's been almost 2 months now, seriously. Catlover2041 08:02, 20 July 2006 (PDT)
Portrait would be fine, but we need someone to select an image and create the exciting introductory text. It needs to be at least as long as what's currently there. Just make a mockup and suggest it. Here's what Emu did when he suggested blockade: User:Emufarmers/Blockade. Folks, I cannot stress this enough: if you want things to be changed, you need to volunteer to do a bit of the work. Seriously. --Guppymomma 08:03, 20 July 2006 (PDT)
Be bold! Format up a featured article in the sandbox, or in your own sandbox subpage under your user page, then submit the link here to be considered for inclusion. --AtteSmythe 08:17, 20 July 2006 (PDT)

Party links in the sidebar

Hopefully this will just be a short discussion. As the number of real-life parties/meetups is increasing these days, a little guideline for the sidebar links could be good. I'm just proposing that we add party links to the lefthand sidebar whenever the party A.) has a wiki page and B.) is a multi-day party. --Guppymomma 20:05, 6 July 2006 (PDT)

Sounds good to me. --Barrister 20:24, 6 July 2006 (PDT)
Ditto. Might help to break those bars up a little? Nav, Community, Other, Search, Toolbox - current events, current blockades, and parties could go under community, leaving Nav to YPPedia-specific things and Other to OOO-official links. --AtteSmythe 21:29, 6 July 2006 (PDT)
That would be nice, although I'm not sure how long that would make it all. (And would the forums link go under community or other?) As to the particulars of this, though, maybe we should just link to a page which has the current meetups listed on it? If we find ourselves with three meetups in planning at the same time, it could get cumbersome to link to each on the sidebar. --Emufarmers 23:41, 6 July 2006 (PDT)
Ah, excellent point with the Forums link. I was thinking Other/Official, though I certainly see the ambiguity. --AtteSmythe 08:21, 7 July 2006 (PDT)

Hunter Blockades

Under the section that gives info for current blockades I don't see info about the current Hunter blockade. But I did find the info when looking on the Current Blockades infor page. --User:Skarfy 2:31, July 29 2006 (PDT)

Thanks for catching that... I've added it. :) --Ponytailguy 07:07, 29 July 2006 (PDT)

Trinkets on pirate pages

I've noticed several people putting trinket collections on their pirate's page. Before I throw any more time at a trinket template, is this something we want to support, or do folks tend to have so many trinkets that it'd be unmaintainable? --AtteSmythe 14:51, 3 August 2006 (PDT)

I think this is a fine idea, both for a seperate table and as a possible infobox addition. I'll make some more detailed comments in the sandbox talk.--Fiddler 15:16, 3 August 2006 (PDT)
I'm for it. Next step - in-game implementation. ;) --Featherfin 15:22, 3 August 2006 (PDT)
I think it's a spiffy enough idea. Just leave it up to the individual and their friends to be obsessed enough about tracking the trinkets. It may help people get more interested in doing wiki articles for their pirates to be able to see the purdy trinket pile. It doesn't need to be as stringent as the familiar info. --Guppymomma 19:50, 3 August 2006 (PDT)
I know it'd be a lot of effort to support all color combinations of trinkets, but I think people would really like to display them, myself included. --Barrister 15:40, 4 August 2006 (PDT)
Ask, and ye shall receive! Actually, I didn't even see this note until now. Regardless, all available color combinations of all trinkets should be up and running. See the usage notes on Template:My trinkets and Template:Infobox pirate. Both templates are in action on my sandbox. More documentation forthcoming, but I'm frickin' tired. --AtteSmythe 00:32, 5 August 2006 (PDT)

Should there be a list of "good articles"?

Just a bit ago, I was browsing randomly, trying to find a good read. Turns out, that's hard to do! So, I think that something like the Wikipedias "Featured Articles", except you call the thing on the front page a "featured article", so I'd figure I'd use another Wiki term instead. In any case, why not make such a list and make an article pass some semi-formal procedure to be added. I'm think mostly about "historic" articles here, like crew/flag pages, and those formally in the history category. Of course, they'd actually have to be "meaty" and well-written. Basicaly, just a way for someone to find interesting articles if they want to read up. Thoughts? --VPeric 12:22, 24 August 2006 (PDT)

Local pirates list

Any objection to sticking it in as a link in the Community section. I'd just use "Local pirates" to shorten it. --Guppymomma 09:11, 8 September 2006 (PDT)

I think that's a very good idea. --AtteSmythe 09:28, 8 September 2006 (PDT)

Blockade openings on island pages

I was wondering, with the new island being opened up from now, could we include a date of when that island will be opened? It could go nicely in the goverment part e.g Swampfen on Viridian.

Goverment

This island is currently unhabitable but will open for blockade on 11/03/06. With the date giving a link to the post that the OM said staing that that island will be opened. So it would link here http://forums.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?p=776409#776409 to Artemis's post.

--Black beard7 09:43, 18 September 2006 (PDT)

I think that would be only useful occasionally and just a space waster most of the time. --Angelbeaver (talk) 14:16, 20 September 2006 (PDT)

Official documents

It seems to be way too hard to use the wiki to find, read, and search the official documents. Am I missing an obvious, easy/simple way to do this? --Behindcurtai 01:42, 30 September 2006 (PDT)

I must admit I have the same problem when I don't know a specific document name to go to. --Angelbeaver (talk) 05:59, 30 September 2006 (PDT)
Try going to Preferences -> Search and enabling searches in the Official namespace by default. I have all of those boxes checked because I can never remember what namespace something was in. --Zava 07:07, 30 September 2006 (PDT)
