Changelog

What do you think of keeping a wiki-fied version of the Ice changelog as a seperate page here on the wiki? I went to check it this morning and found that everything prior to 8-12-2005 had been wiped off. This could be interesting for people looking to see the development of the newest features. I imagine that this should be a protected page like the release pages are.--Fiddler 06:52, 15 August 2005 (PDT)

Go for it. --Guppymomma 08:37, 15 August 2005 (PDT)

Ocean chart

Where should we include the Template:Map:Ice Ocean chart that I just finished? It's a bit large to add into this page.--Fiddler 09:54, 23 August 2005 (PDT)

Odd wording

Something seems weird about this: "However, with Fort Royal and Eieio Island being colonized (read: not buying the fruits they used to)." Um, I thought Fort Royal and Eieio's fruit buying didn't change when they were colonized? Both islands had markets before they were colonized, and neither place could be foraged, so I think that may need to be reworded. --Thunderbird 18:06, 4 March 2006 (PST)

I interpret that sentence as 'Because Fort Royal and Eieio Island are colonized, foraging valuable fruits and selling them is getting somewhat difficult'. I think the sentence needs rewording to avoid any confusion as to its meaning. --Icex05 19:09, 4 March 2006 (PST)

Colonized islands?

Is that list of colonized islands on Ice accurate? I thought Kings and Obliette were uncolonized. --Behindcurtai 23:43, 5 March 2006 (PST)

They are colonized in order to allow the practice blockades on them to be nonsinking. Look at Ice Imperium's flag info (they control those two). Neither has buildings, though Kings has the remnants of a dusted one (complete with a bugged arrow). --Thunderbird 00:40, 6 March 2006 (PST)

Test vs. subscription

I've recategorized Ice as a test ocean rather than a subscription ocean. With the new way of accessing ice using doubloons, describing it as a subscription ocean seems not quite right. --Barrister 00:40, 8 April 2006 (PDT)

Access to Ice: fixed!

Okay, thanks to User:Sashamorning and others on the forums, we've cleaned up and expanded the section about access. Hopefully things are a lot clearer now. It wasn't right to put off doublooners by telling them they had no access - the current system is really a great compromise. Next section in need of some love is the blockades stuff - all the rules have changed now. --Chupchup 04:55, 16 August 2007 (PDT)

It has been discovered that the time limit after buying doubloons seems to be longer than 30 days. In fact it may be closer to 90 days/three months. In the absence of official confirmation, I'll wait a while, and make an update with a vague figure, rather than the exact "30 days" - which appears to be incorrect. --Chupchup 22:39, 2 April 2008 (PDT)
In the past, the developers have requested to be notified of anything that doesn't seem to be working as intended. Since it has been officially stated in a few places that it is the past month, it should be reported as a bug. --Thunderbird 16:30, 8 April 2008 (PDT)

Culture and Economy - NPOV

Don't know if that is exactly the right tag. We discussed this on the forums and the upshot is that we think it's a bad idea to add subjective material like this. Furthermore the comment on /greeter chat is a potshot at my feelings about it and somewhat inaccurate besides. I don't think this section contains encyclopedic content and it sets a poor precedent for comments on other ocean pages. --Chupchup 02:17, 27 February 2008 (PST)

I'm not sure that there's an NPOV violation here, but the grammar and sentence structure are awful. And that's not the proper use of the word "henceforth." I'll give Soveruin (or anyone else) a few days to clean it up. If nothing happens, I'll probably just rewrite the section from scratch. --Barrister 11:32, 27 February 2008 (PST)

Does anyone really gather around spawn points waiting for Merchant Brigands? Do they even do this in production oceans? It seems pretty common knowledge that fighting merchants is a waste of time, and how many people are really going to crowd around, when most people on Ice tend to solo/duo pillage anyway? (Also, rare commodities only spawn in a single place, no matter what ocean it is, no matter how many islands there are. Ice's islands merely double up on valuable spawns so they are all covered.) --Chupchup 05:15, 5 March 2008 (PST)

I don't spend enough time on Ice to evaluate this claim. If you think it's bogus, feel free to edit it. --Barrister 14:55, 5 March 2008 (PST)

Typo in last edit

"the new" is repeated twice in Clotho's edit. I am not sure why this page is full-protected, but nobody but sysops can edit it. Chupchup 15:02, 17 November 2013 (PST)

Fixed. The page was originally protected by Endymion, so I'd prefer to leave that alone, at least currently. --Thunderbird 19:30, 17 November 2013 (PST)
That was an oops, thanks for fixing! The page is fully protected because in game documentation and official pages link to it. --Clotho 20:53, 17 November 2013 (PST)

error with "Geography" section

There is an error in the "Geography" section. Specifically, Diablo Island is *not* colonized. Since this page is protected, I can not fix this myself. -- Franklincain (t/c) 11:00, 10 January 2014 (PST)

heh... I just tried to fix that after updating the ice ocean wiki map. I guess we shouldn't hold our breaths... Wrs1864b 05:56, 6 May 2014 (PDT)

PPX

In the section entitled Downloading the Ice Client, the sentence " The links below are for the classic client. If you are looking for the new game client, please go to this page instead: Official:Puzzle Pirates X" should be reworded as PPX has now been abandoned. --Therobotdude 12:46, 24 May 2014 (PDT)

Hmm. I might drop a line to Clo and see what she thinks should be done with it, whether it should be removed altogether or reworded. --Belthazar451 14:59, 24 May 2014 (PDT)

Date format

I am not sure, but I think the date format could use some improvement. I would write them all as e.g. "November 14, 2013" instead of the YYYY-MM-DD, which by the way is ambiguous as non-Americans can read it as YYYY-DD-MM. I think the only reason we've used YYYY-MM-DD so much is because release names are formatted this way, which is good for release names as it correctly orders them in a numerical sort, but hard for humans to read. Chupchup 14:34, 25 May 2014 (PDT)

I think it's general good practice to use full written dates in text, just as you'd write "five types of sword" rather than "5 types of sword" in a block of text. For releases and anything that requires shorthand (e.g. lists), I find YYYY-MM-DD least ambiguous out of all the date representations (Probably because it's just my native DD-MM-YYYY backwards :P). In fact, it's a standard date format chosen to be unambiguous. Might be worth sticking a note wherever the shorthand appears (but maybe just on Category:History:Releases and Release/all for releases) saying explicitly that the date is ordered YYYY-MM-DD. --Therobotdude 15:01, 25 May 2014 (PDT)

why protected?

Just out of curiosity, why is this page protected? I presume this page needed to be locked at the time that it was done. (It was locked back in January of 2011.) Does it still need to be locked now?

Reason I ask is, I see several minor corrections to be made, small enough that it would take longer to document these corrections here in the Talk page, and to wait for them to be fixed, than to just make those changes myself (presuming the page was not locked).

Thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 12:27, 16 June 2014 (PDT)

Suggested edits

"Specific Differences" section

I have some suggestions for the "Specific Differences" section:

  • Should probably have more links . . . Lots more links.
  • For list of "core duty puzzles" in "crew creation":
    • Rigging wasn't capitalized.
    • Patching was missing.
    • List should be alphabetized.

To make it easier, here is how I'd rewrite that section.

BEGIN CODE-BLOCK

END CODE-BLOCK

Thanks. -- Franklincain (t/c) 21:39, 16 June 2014 (PDT)

Should we mention that sloops are available from the Palace Shoppe for 2,000 PoE? Chupchup 22:14, 18 June 2014 (PDT)
Excellent suggestion. I've incorporated this into the code-block above. -- Franklincain (t/c) 08:01, 19 June 2014 (PDT)
Sloop price just went to 30,000. Perhaps the exact price should just be omitted. "A nominal cost" or something like that. Chupchup 22:02, 19 June 2014 (PDT)
Updated... -- Franklincain (t/c) 05:46, 20 June 2014 (PDT)

Downloading the Ice Client

This passage is out-of-date. "Note that client installations older than March 28th, 2008 will need to be completely uninstalled before an installation will work properly, due to changes in the software deployment framework. If you're having trouble logging in, this is a good thing to check first." I'm not sure if it needs to be replaced or added to. I guess it is still true. But there is another epoch now, yes? Those who installed the PPX client will need to zorch it and reinstall from scratch again. So there should be a 2014 date to add to this list. Chupchup 14:30, 17 June 2014 (PDT)

I never paid much attention during the whole PPX thing. Is there a specific date when the PPX client was reverted? --Thunderbird 02:40, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
