Official Talk:Installation

From YPPedia

Mac OSX Panther section

There appear to be a few sections where a link is expected, but none exists. Namely, the installer link, and the one that's referencing a thread that isn't linked. --Thunderbird 23:34, 26 January 2006 (PST)

Additionally, this needs to be updated for 10.4 Tiger, and the new Java 1.5. Both that (A) Mac Java 1.5 fixes the graphics issues, and (B) How to change the default from 1.4 to 1.5. --Behindcurtai 13:37, 27 January 2006 (PST)

The client will soon require Java 1.5 to run at all. Java 1.4 is no longer supported. --Chupchup 14:08, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Add Recommended system spec?

I've noticed this page only lists the minimum system spec, and not the recommended one that I've seen posted to the forum a few times (and is on the Ubi box). Perhaps adding the recommended system spec would be a good idea, for easy reference? --Thunderbird 15:10, 19 August 2006 (PDT)

Incoming ports?

Regarding: "Puzzle Pirates uses TCP incoming and outgoing over Ports 47624 and 4007, along with port 80 for in-game web pages. "

I am 99% sure that the client does not use any inbound ports. That is why it works over NAT. I just checked my system and the client is not listening, only an outgoing TCP connection. This is why it's not advisable to make any changes in Windows Firewall - see my edits to Cannot log in#Windows Firewall and Talk:Cannot log in - the client does not act as a server. "New" Error

I was send to this page by the installer, who wants to update the PP-Client.

The Error was "Premature EOF" when the downloaded files are installed. So the files are corrupt?

EOF = End Of File

Thanks ... Birgi 13:53, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

For questions like this, probably the Technical Issues forum is more likely to produce a helpful answer. But yes, the message looks like some files were corrupted during the download. Often this kind of problem can be fixed by a complete reinstall of YPP (uninstall the game, then install it again). Using the full installer mentioned in this article under Windows Issues is another thing you could try. --Alfwyn 14:12, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Java references outdated, and security vulnerabilities

This document's references to Java are increasingly outdated. Java 6 has been out for some time, and I believe is even supported on Mac OS X, but there is no mention of it even being supported.

Special note should be taken of Oracle's security advisory as of June 2011 that states that all versions of Java prior to JRE 6 Update 26 are vulnerable to exploits including remote execution - this means that anyone with an old installation of Java can be hacked over the Internet - the recommended course of action is to upgrade immediately to the latest Java (end users can use Java.COM as a friendly interface) and then uninstall all old versions of Java.

Uninstallation is necessary because Java normally upgrades by adding the new version to the list of Java environments available for execution, rather than updating in place. Uninstallation is a separate step and required if you wish to close the security holes presented by the affected Java versions. Please spread the word. This affects every single user with the Puzzle Pirates client.

Unfortunately, as of this writing there is no fix for Apple's Mac OS X. Mac OS X Java is maintained separately by Apple, and so Cupertino has to make the next move in making this available to their users. Chupchup 01:32, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Please see my forum thread for more links and information and hopefully, discussion. I would recommend to an Ocean Master putting a sticky on this thread for maximum effect. Chupchup 01:34, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Minimum requirements

I think you should add screen resolution to the minimum requirement section. Puzzle Pirates requires a window of at least 800x600, but some older "netbooks" are unable to comply with a vertical resolution of 600, and people have a hard time running the client on them as a result. Otherwise, netbooks seem to support the client rather well. Chupchup 21:26, 17 June 2012 (PDT)
