The /emote command changes how a message is displayed, by placing the sender's name in front of the message. It is one of three modifier commands; the others being /think and /shout.

Emote can be combined with /crew, /jcrew, /vessel, /house, /game, and /speak chat channels, although it is not a chat channel itself. Adding the Emote command to the start of a message only affects that message's appearance.

Usage

The Emote command has the following syntax:

[chat channel] /emote <message> (/e, /em or /me)

When no chat channel (E.G., /crew or /house) is specified, Emote will use the channel specified on the list to the left of the chat box. It can not be combined with the /fbroadcast, /fofficer, /officer, /royalty and /tell channels.

Appearance in-game

Messages sent with the Emote modifier command take the following form in the chat window:

Piratename Message

For example, a pirate named Callistan types /speak /emote has another drink. The output is: Callistan has another drink.

The Emote command, when combined with Speak, adds concave edges to the message - both in the chat window and in the text bubble which appears in the scene. However, if the Emote command is combined with any other chat channel, it will retain the appearance of that other chat channel. For example, /house /emote message would display piratename message in a house-shaped bubble. Additionally, Speak is the only command which creates speech bubbles in scenes; all other commands are limited to the chat window.

Substitutions

Some text strings, when typed, expand to messages which display with /Emote.

Emoticons

Emoticons are text strings which resemble faces. In order for the game to display emoticons with /Emote, the emoticon must be the first text entered on the line, and any following text will be included in the emote equivalent. E.G. ":-) too funny" would translate to "/emote smiles too funny". These emoticons can be used in all other chat channels which support combining /Emote.

Emoticon /Emote Equivalent

Note: An asterisk * can be substituted for a dash - in any of the emoticons above.

Other emote substitutions

Some other text strings expand to Emote messages. To do this, as with emoticons, they must be the first text entered into the chat window.

afk /emote dozes off
lmao /emote laughs heartily
lol /emote laughs
rofl /emote laughs uncontrollably

Historical note

Between release 2005-06-29 and release 2005-07-08, the command for remove players from buildings was /eject. This conflicted with /e, a shortcut for /emote. The command to remove players from buildings was therefore changed to /plank.
