Its name is a play on the crate o'spices furniture item and either of two characters named Splice in the Marvel Comics universe. A minor character named Splice appears in the Thor series as part of the heroic Young Gods. A different, villainous Splice appears as an actor-turned-assassin in the comic Wonder Man.
