Portrait
Portraits are in-game paintings any player can purchase at any house, shoppe, or ship with an easel in it. Easels can always be found inside of palaces. Prices vary depending on the background chosen and the number of people in the portrait. Portraits can be viewed in player galleries accessible from a pirate info page.

Basics
When a portrait is commissioned, each pirate is shown in the clothing he or she is currently wearing . (However, portraits cannot be made while the pirate is trying on clothes from a tailor's rack.) The colors are reproduced as well as any injuries. If the pirate is wearing a familiar, that is also shown. The date the portrait was comissioned, as well as the location of the easel, can be viewed on the gallery view of the portrait.
On doubloon oceans, commissioning a portrait costs doubloons (varying depending on the background). Each additional print costs seven doubloons and 5000 PoE.
The portrait item in the inventory will not decay; nor will framed portraits[1]. They can, however, be trashed.
Items
A pirate can hold a single item in a portrait or choose to hold nothing at all. Items are only available if the pirate meets the criteria necessary for it. Some items exist but can only be held by Ocean Masters at this time.

Backgrounds
Each background is unique in its own way. Some backgrounds are cheap, but can only hold one pirate. Others are more expensive, but can hold multiple pirates. Some of the more expensive backgrounds let you choose whether you wish to put the posing pirate all in one row or into two separate rows. Putting the pirates into two rows will allow you to cram another pirate or two into the portrait, but will cause the portrait to cost more. In the chart below, the cost and maximum number of pirates will show the data for the "All in a Row" selection first, followed by a slash (/) and then the data for the "Two Rows" selection.
