Brigand Kings (abbreviated BK) are special brigands found occasionally when players attack red- or orange-ringed ships. Brigand kings cannot be distinguished from normal brigands before entering sea battle. Rather, the brigand king makes an announcement at the start of the sea battle and the brigand ship will display the <Brigand King> flag on the battle navigation screen. During the melee the normal swordfight puzzle background is replaced with a special "Brigand King!" background. Once the battle ends the brigand king's ship disappears immediately. Barbarian Kings behave exactly like Brigand Kings, except they display <Barbarian King> during sea battle, rumble during the melee, and use a "Barbarian King!" background1.

Defeating a brigand king provides a special trinket particular to that king. These trinkets can be held in portraits. The trinkets are inscribed with the message, "Ransomed by <Brigand King> to <Pirate> on <date>." Every experienced player2 aboard will receive the same type of trinket, but they may be different colors.

Old salts in the inn will provide information on the kings for their standard ten PoE fee. This information appears to be a random statement pertaining to a specific King gathering/plundering a certain type of fruit. How exactly these statements pertain to the Brigand Kings is uncertain. There is speculation that the fruit increases the chance of that Brigand King appearing, but people have also encountered Brigand Kings without having any fruit on board, so it doesn't seem to be a requirement to get them.

1 There have been cases of Admiral Finius and Gretchen Goldfang being a Barbarian King yet the background to the rumble puzzle appears as a non-Barbarian King rumble background.
2 On doubloon oceans, the player must be holding at least a Pirate badge. On subscription oceans, the player must be subscribed.

Note: While there have been posts in the forum done under the guise of the Brigand Kings, these are unofficial postings made by players that are not Ocean Masters or any other Three Rings staff and are not approved.

Brigand King Blockades

Brigand King's Flotilla

Flotillas will be constant nodes of Brigand King focus. A BK always has a flotilla unless attacking or ruling an island. A flotilla in a region means next island target of the Brigand King is nearby (unless he is provoked, see below). Any number of players on any number of ships may attack the forces of the BK in a continuous flotilla battle board. Ships may come and go, like a blockade. Sinking a BK's supply ships puts treasure on the board for hauling. Sinking all of the supply ships forces the BK to relocate his flotilla elsewhere, removing the threat from the local islands.

Brigand King's Ship

Royals see this message when a BK is defeated

Encountering a Brigand King ship on the open ocean will happen much as it does now. However, if you are a royal of the flag that owns the ship, you get a scuttling prompt on victory. Whether you scuttle or not, the crew gets prizes and booty. Scuttling a BK's ship on the open ocean is a trigger for him to attack your flag's island next. This does not directly affect the Brigand King's flotilla in any way. It indirectly affects his flotilla in two ways:

  • The flotilla signifies a threat to nearby islands, but if the BK is attacking a provoking flag, he is not attacking islands.
  • If a BK claims an island, his flotilla goes to port there.[1]

Brigand King Flotillas

Brigand Kings are currently appearing in flotillas on all oceans. This is said to be a prelude to declaring a blockade on a nearby island. It is also said that players will be able to "chase" the Brigand Kings away from islands by sinking them in flotillas.

Amassed Power

Attacking and Defending BK (Opal ocean)

"Power" is a rough measurement of how large the forces a Brigand King has gathered to blockade the island of their choice. Amassed Power can be viewed by looking, on the blockades section of the notice board, at the number of ships File:PowerBK.png that appear after the name of the Brigand King's flag, but before the symbol showing that they are attacking. The Power will also be shown when a BK is defending an island.

Specially-named ships

Brigand King ships which appear in blockades and flotillas have been observed to use a different naming convention than brigand vessels. A List of known Brigand King ship name adjectives is available. These special adjectives are not used when Brigand Kings are found in ordinary sea battle as described above.

Historical Notes

The artwork for Vargas the Mad was missing until release 2006-07-19. Players who encountered him at sea would see an error message instead of his face.

Azarbad the Great didn't appear on the oceans until the release 2007-05-24.
