Line 1: Line 1:
A shanghai or shanghai point is given to a crew when one of its members subscribes or buys doubloons for the first time.  Each account has only one shanghai to give; at the time of an account's first payment, the shanghai is awarded to the crew of the pirate most recently logged in on the appropriate type of ocean (subscriber or doubloon).  Shanghais are used for renaming ships and crews.  The number of shanghai points a crew currently has (as well as the crew's total accumulation) is visible on the crew's information page by the captain and senior officers.

Shanghai Use
Shanghais may be "spent" to rename ships and crews.  To do so, an Ocean Master must be petitioned, and the crew's captain must either be present or must have given permission to another crew member to spend the points. If a crew has no captain, they must name a person who has authorization to use the shanghai points in their private statement.

Trading and Selling Shanghais
Shanghais can be traded or sold by crews, however the shanghai points cannot actually be transferred to another crew.  The exception to this is in the case of a crew merge, which combines the Shanghais of both crews. Instead, the captain of the crew that has sold the shanghais must be present when the receiving crew uses them and the OM will deduct the number of sold shanghais from the seller's crew as well as any additional shanghais needed for the rename(s) from the purchasing crew.

Remember that shanghais for renaming purposes can only come from up to two crews.

The number of shanghais needed for a standard rename or a custom rename for each ship are shown in the table to the right.

Standard Renames
* A "standard rename" must be in the format adjective + fish name (e.g. Happy Trout), a total of two words only.

* The adjective must be listed as an adjective on its Dictionary.com entry.

* The fish must be listed in Fishbase.org as a single name.

** e.g. "Trout" is ok, "Rockskipper" is not as it only appears in compound forms like "Striped Rockskipper".

* Changing only the fishname or the adjective will still cost the same as a normal rename.

Custom Renames
Ships can also be renamed to something that does not follow the adjective + fish name format, or to non-standard fish or adjectives (e.g. Boring Trout to Do Re Mi, for more than the cost of a standard rename (see table). Vessels can be renamed after a pirate, as long as the name is a real word on Dictionary.com. Half-renames are permitted, but will still cost the full custom rename rate.  Possessive names such as "Bow's Ship" are not allowed.

Renaming Regulations
In addition to the requirements above, the following apply:

* The words in the ship name must be correctly spelled.

* The name must be unique (e.g., it must not be used by any other vessels on the same ocean).

* Some ship names will not be accepted at all - particularly if they are offensive, hard to spell, or do not fit within the Puzzle Pirate universe.

* Custom names may have up to three words in them, all of which must be real words in English as defined on Dictionary.com.

* The final call on whether a ship rename is standard, custom, or not acceptable rests with the Ocean Master; players are asked to respect his or her decision, without arguing or "shopping" around for a second opinion.

Renaming Procedure
* Only captains may authorize the use of their crew's shanghai points.  The captain may designate specific other crew members as having the right to authorize shanghai use by making a note saying so in their crew's private statement.

* Shanghai points cannot be traded between crews, only used for renames.

* Shanghai points can only come from up to two crews per rename.

To submit for a rename, a pirate authorized to spend shanghais must send in a petition with the subject "Rename - <current vessel name here>". The following information must be included in the petition text:

* Proposed rename

* Current name

* Location of vessel

* Size of vessel

* Whether this is a standard or custom rename

* Name of crew that owns the vessel

* Which crew(s) are providing shanghai points and how many

If you are renaming a vessel on behalf of another crew, this additional information is required:

* How many Shanghai Points are coming from your crew

* Who the rename is for

* The crew they are in

If the shanghai points for a rename are coming from two crews, both crews' captains or authorized crewmembers are required to petition with the information.

It is not necessary for captains or crew members to be aboard the ship for the renaming if all of the above information is supplied.

Crew Renames
Crews can also be renamed.  Crew names must be between 2 and 24 characters long.  Prices are as follows:

*2 shanghais - a new name (e.g. "Generic Pillagers" to "Extraordinary Leaders")

*1 shanghai - a small change in the current name (e.g. "Serve no Porpoise" to "Serve every Porpoise")

Historical Notes
Shanghais were introduced with 2004-02-09.

Crew renames were added to shanghai usage on March 3, 2004.
