why protected?

why is this template protected, please? why can't we edit it? thnx... -- Franklincain (t/c) 14:06, 31 July 2012 (PDT)

never did get an answer to this, so I just created an alternate version of this header template with the needed fixes included. problem solved... -- Franklincain (t/c) 12:10, 25 August 2012 (PDT)
... Seriously? Rather than bump it, or ask someone about it directly, you thought it better to make a new template? It's extremely possible that noone noticed your original post, because it got buried in the other fifty or sixty edits you made at the same time. What, exactly, were "the needed fixes", because the only differences I can spot are a couple of linebreaks and a weirdly-placed space. Was that honestly worth eleven pointless edits? To answer the question you originally asked (as opposed to the question you ought to have asked), templates are usually protected to prevent people from mistakenly editing the template rather than the article, as was the case here. --Belthazar451 14:02, 25 August 2012 (PDT)
This template has been protected since 2008 to prevent accidental editing or deletion, make sure not to create alternate pages or templates for the few that are protected this way. Unfortunately the new alternate template is not needed and an unnecessary duplicate, let's go back to the way it was please. If this template does need editing, or if protecting it is no longer necessary, please leave the information in this talk page for review. Please keep in mind that discussion may take some time. --Clotho 21:23, 26 August 2012 (PDT)
