Installation

Ahoy! Before setting sail, ye'll need to install Puzzle Pirates on yer computer. This article explains the different ways to download the game and offers a few tips if anything gets in the way. Most pirates are up and running within a few minutes.

If ye run into choppy waters, ye can reach us anytime at support@puzzlepirates.com.

Supported Systems

Puzzle Pirates runs on Windows 10 or later, macOS 11.0 Big Sur or later and Linux and other Unix-like systems. The game is lightweight and runs on most modern hardware. Any system that can run a current version of Java and handle standard desktop applications should be fine.

A Note on New Accounts

Creating new accounts through the classic client is temporarily unavailable while the team works on bringing it up to modern standards. Existing YPP accounts can still use the classic client normally. New players should create their accounts through Steam for now.

Install Puzzle Pirates

Visit puzzlepirates.com/play.html to download the installer for yer platform. The game installers include everything needed to run the game, so you don't need to install Java separately.

Installation Notes by Platform

Windows

  • If your antivirus blocks the installer or the game, add java.exe and javaw.exe to the allowed list. These files are usually found in the Java installation folder inside Program Files or Program Files (x86).
  • If updates fail or files seem corrupted, uninstall and reinstall using the installer from the download page above.

macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon)

  • To find out if your macOS is Intel or Apple Silicon, go to the Apple menu > About This Mac. If it says "Chip" and lists M1, M2, M3, etc., it's Apple Silicon. If it says "Processor" and lists an Intel processor, it's an Intel-based Mac.
  • After downloading the .dmg, you may need to right-click and choose "Open" due to Gatekeeper.
  • If macOS blocks it, attempt to install (it will fail), then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and scroll down until you see a message saying the app was blocked. Click "Open Anyway" or "Allow", then try installing once more.

Linux

Troubleshooting

Firewall Issues

  • Puzzle Pirates uses TCP over ports 47624 and 4007, along with port 80 for in-game web pages.
  • Security software may also block Java from connecting. Make sure java.exe and javaw.exe are on the firewall's exceptions list. These files are usually found in the Java installation folder inside Program Files or Program Files (x86).

Connection Issues

  • A proxy server can cause problems on startup, including a dialog box asking for your proxy settings. You can usually find those settings in your browser under Tools, Options, Connections, or LAN Settings.
  • If you are not sure whether you are using a proxy, check your firewall or security software to confirm Java is allowed to connect.

Scaling and Display Issues

  • If the interface looks too large or zoomed in, turn Double UI Scale to OFF in Ye > Options > General and restart the game.
  • If the interface looks too small on a large monitor, turn Double UI Scale to ON and restart.
  • The game client can be adjusted by dragging the corners with your mouse.
  • On Windows, your system display scaling (Settings > Display > Scale and Layout) can also affect how large the client appears. Try adjusting it and restarting.

Missing digest.txt / Launch Errors

  • If the game fails to launch because it is missing digest.txt, delete the following three files and relaunch: getdown.txt, version.txt, and digest.txt.
  • These files are in the same folder as your yohoho.log. If you are not sure where that is, see the paths listed here. You can also search your computer for "yoclient" to find the installation folder.

Performance and Audio Issues

  • Puzzle Pirates can be a bit of a processor hog on older hardware, which may cause audio stutter or interference with other software. Turning off in-game sound and closing background programs will help. If your hard drive is working hard while you play, low memory is likely the cause.

Uninstalling

Windows

  • Use Apps and Features to uninstall the Puzzle Pirates classic client.
  • The current installer places game files in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Puzzle Pirates.
    • Note: If the game was installed before Release 2025-11-13, look in this location instead: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Three Rings Design.
      • If files from the old location are still present, removing them manually ensures a clean install and avoids conflicts.
      • To check, open File Explorer, type %appdata% into the address bar and press Enter, then look for a folder called Three Rings Design. If it is there, delete it after uninstalling.
  • Check your desktop for any old Puzzle Pirates shortcuts and delete them. Shortcuts created by the old installer may still point to the old location and launch the wrong version.

macOS

  • In Finder, open Applications, find Puzzle Pirates, and move it to the trash. To fully remove game data, open Finder, press Shift + Command + G, type ~/Library and hit Return. Look for a folder called Preferences, then delete the yoclient folder inside it.

Linux

  • Remove the installation directory manually. The yoclient folder is usually found at /home/[username]/yoclient.

Steam

If you installed Puzzle Pirates through Steam, uninstall it through Steam. For a clean reinstall that helps sort corrupted files or stuck updates, follow these steps:

  • Uninstall Puzzle Pirates through Steam.
  • Manually delete any remaining files in the Puzzle Pirates folder, if the folder still exists. This folder can be found by right-clicking the game in Steam library > Manage > Browse Local Files.
  • Clear the Steam download cache in Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
  • Reinstall Puzzle Pirates from the Steam library.

Note that clearing the Steam download cache and deleting the game folder are two separate steps: clearing the cache removes temporary download data that Steam stores on its end, while deleting the folder removes the actual game files from your computer. Both steps are recommended for a proper clean reinstall, which is why the steps above include them.
